勃朗特唯一一部素有争议的作品,出版于1847年。
这部作品是关于爱情与仇恨的故事,其中女主人凯瑟琳是一个复杂难以捉摸的人物。
由于受到社会环境,家庭因素和自身因素的影响,凯瑟琳在林顿带给她的虚荣和希斯克利夫带给他的真实感受和快乐中徘徊,最终违背了自己的灵魂选择了虚荣,一生都在爱与恨之间纠结。
而且由于她,希斯克利夫才进行了复仇,造成了两大悲剧。
本文主要分析凯瑟琳的人物形象和性格特征以及引起其性格变化的主要原因。

WUTHERINGHEIGHTS,theonlyonecontroversialworksofEmilyBrontë
waspublishedin1847.Thisworkisastoryaboutloveandhatred,inwhichtheheroineCatherineisacomplicatedcharacter.Becausesheisinfluencedbyenvironmentalandfamilyfactors,shehesitatedbetweenLintonwhomeetshervanityandHeathcliffwhobringshertruefeelingsandhappiness.Finallyshebetrayshersoulandchoosesvanity,asaresult,herlifeentangledbetweenloveandhatred.Also,becauseofher,Heathcliffbeguntotakerevenge.ThemainlypurposeofthispaperistoanalyzethecharactersofCatherine.

andMariaBranwell.ShewastheyoungersisterofCharlotteBrontë
andthefifthofsixchildren.In1824,thefamilymovedtoHaworth,whereEmily’sfatherwasperpetualcurate,anditwasinthesesurroundingsthattheirliteraryodditiesflourished.Inchildhood,afterthedeathoftheirmother,thethreesistersandtheirbrotherPatrickBranwellBrontë
createdimaginarylands,whichwerefeaturedinstoriestheywrote.LittleofEmily’sworkfromthisperiodsurvived,exceptforpoemsspokenbycharacters(TheBrontë
s’WebofChildhood,FannieRatchford,1941).
In1838,EmilycommencedworkasagovernessatMissPatchett’sLadiesAcademyatLawHillSchool,nearHalifax,leavingafteraboutsixmonthsduetohomesickness.Later,withhersisterCharlotte,sheattendedaprivateschoolinBrusselsrunbyConstantinHegerandhiswife,ClaireZoë
ParentHeger.Theylatertriedtoopenupaschoolattheirhome,buthadnopupils.
ItwasthediscoveryofEmily’spoetictalentbyCharlottethatledherandhersisterstopublishajointcollectionoftheirpoetryin1846,PoemsbyCurrer,Ellis,andActonBell.Toevadecontemporaryprejudiceagainstfemalewriters,theBrontë
sistersadoptedandrogynousfirstnames.Allthreeretainedthesameinitials:
CharlottebecameCurrerBell,AnnebecameActonBellandEmilybecameEllisBell.
In1847,shepublishedheronlynovel,WutheringHeights,astwovolumesofathreevolumeset(thelastvolumebeingAgnesGreybyhersisterAnne).Itsinnovativestructuresomewhatpuzzledcritics.Althoughitreceivedmixedreviewswhenitfirstcameout,thebooksubsequentlybecameanEnglishliteraryclassic.In1850,CharlotteeditedandpublishedWutheringHeightsasastand-alonenovelandunderEmily’srealname.
AportraitofConstantinHeger(1865),ProfessorofEmilyandCharlotteduringtheirstayinBrusselsin1842Emily’shealth,likehersister,hadbeenweakenedbytheharshlocalclimateathomeandatschool.ShecaughtacoldduringthefuneralofherbrotherinSeptember,whichledtotuberculosis.Refusingmedicalhelp,shediedon19December1848atabouttwointheafternoon.Shewasinterred.
