Artificialembryotwinningistherelativelylow-techversionofcloning.Asthenamesuggests,thistechnologymimicsthenaturalprocessofcreatingidenticaltwins.

Openlargeversion

Innature,twinsoccurjustafterfertilizationofaneggcellbyaspermcell.Inrarecases,whentheresultingfertilizedegg,calledazygote,triestodivideintoatwo-celledembryo,thetwocellsseparate.Eachcellcontinuesdividingonitsown,ultimatelydevelopingintoaseparateindividualwithinthemother.Sincethetwocellscamefromthesamezygote,theresultingindividualsaregeneticallyidentical.

Artificialembryotwinningusesthesameapproach,butitoccursinaPetridishinsteadofinthemother'

sbody.Thisisacplishedbymanuallyseparatingaveryearlyembryointoindividualcells,andthenallowingeachcelltodivideanddeveloponitsown.Theresultingembryosareplacedintoasurrogatemother,wheretheyarecarriedtotermanddelivered.Again,sincealltheembryoscamefromthesamezygote,theyaregeneticallyidentical.

Somaticcellnucleartransfer,(SCNT)usesadifferentapproachthanartificialembryotwinning,butitproducesthesameresult:

anexactclone,orgeneticcopy,ofanindividual.ThiswasthemethodusedtocreateDollytheSheep.
