Abstract:

ThispaperintendstostudyingthepoemIWanderedLonelyasaCloudbyWilliamWordsworthfromtheaspectsofthephonologicallevel,thegraphologicallevelandfiguresofspeech.

Introduction

WilliamWordsworthistheleadingfigureoftheEnglishRomanticMovementinpoetry,thefocalvoiceoftheromanticperiod.Hehadmadeoutstandingcontributionstothetheorycreationandpracticeofpoetrycreation.Heobservesthat“allgoodpoetryisthespontaneousoverflowofpowerfulfeeling”,andpoetryoriginatesfrom“emotionrecollectedintranquility”.TheseprincipleshelptocrumblethetheoreticalfoundationsoftheclassicalschoolofEnglishpoetry,rejectingtheemphasisontheformandanintellectualapproachthatdrainedpoeticwritingofstrongemotion,andalsoinspireanewgenerationofpoets.IWanderedLonelyasaCloudisoneofhismasterpiecesonnature,whichcantakeustothecoreofhispoeticbeliefs.

1.AtthePhonologicalLevel

1.1Meter

Thispoemiswrittenbasicallyiniambictetrameter.However,iftheauthorisconsistentthroughoutthepoeminusingthispattern,itmaymakethepoemsounddullandsolemn,thusnotinkeepingwiththeintentionoftheauthortodescribethebriskdancingofthedaffodils.Forthisreason,theauthormakessomeadjustmentsincertainplaces.Forinstance,inthelastlineofthefirststanza(“Flutteringanddancinginthebreeze”),thereareonlythreestressedsyllables:

/.Andsuchadjustmentinrespectofthestressskillfullyconveysthechangeinthepoet’sstateofmind:

justwhenthepoetwanderedasacloudsolitarily,abedofdaffodilscameintohisview,makinghimenlivenedandexhilarated.Anotherexamplecomesfromthelastlineofthesecondstanza(“Tossingtheirheadsinsprightlydance”),here,thefirstfootturnstobeatrochee.Andthisvariationreinforcesthemovementexpressedbytheverb“toss”,whichdelineatesvividlythescenethatthedaffodilsraisetheirheadsgailyinthebreeze,thusmakingthewholesentencemoreexpressive,andatthesametime,conveyingtheuncontrolledpassionoftheauthoratthatmoment.

Inaddition,inthispoem,theauthormakesgreateffortsinthephoneticchoice.Forexample,amongthestressedsyllables,inthefirststanza,therearealotoflongvowelsanddiphthongsmakingthetempoofthepoemslowdown;

whileinthesecondstanza,theshortvowelsassumeadominantpositioninthedistributionofvowels,thusspeedingupthepaceofthepoem.Thischange,obviously,isinaccordancewiththechangeinthetoneofthepoem.Inthefirststanza,thepoetwanderedlonelyasacloudoverthevalesandhills,andcameacrosssuddenlyahostofdaffodils,sothemovementisslowandaimless,andthebasictoneofthisstanzaiscarelessness,orevenlethargy.Sothetemposhouldbeslow.However,inthesecondstanza,thepoetfocusesonthedescriptionofthesprightlydancingdaffodilsinthewind,thebasictoneisbrisknessandrapture

sothetemponowshouldbequickened.

1.2Rhyme

Thepoemisdividedintofourstanzaswiththerhymeschemeas:

ababccforeachstanza.Tobemorespecific,ineachstanza,therearethreerhymingcouplets:

thefirstlineandthethirdline,thesecondlineandthefourthline,andthelasttwolines,thusmakingthepoemgoessmoothly,harmoniouslyandrhythmically.
