1.PurposeandScope

1.1Thistestmethodprovidesaquantitativeprocedurefortheevaluationofthedegreeofantibacterialactivity.Assessmentofantibacterialfinishesontextilematerialsisdeterminedbythedegreeofantibacterialactivityintendedintheuseofsuchmaterials.Ifonlybacteriostaticactivity（inhibitionofmultiplication）isintended,aqualitativeprocedurewhichclearlydemonstratesantibacterialactivityascontrastedwithlackofsuchactivitybyanuntreatedspecimenmaybeacceptable.However,ifbactericidalactivityisintendedorimplied,quantitativeevaluationisnecessary.Quantitativeevaluationalsoprovidesaclearerpictureforpossibleusesofsuchtreatedtextilematerials.

2.Principle

2.1SwatchesoftestandcontroltextilematerialsaretestedqualitativelyforantibacterialactivitybyAATCCMethod147.Thoseshowingactivityareevaluatedquantitatively.Testandcontrolswatchesareinoculatedwiththetestorganisms.Afterincubation,thebacteriaareelutedfromtheswatchesbyshakinginknownamountsofneutralizingsolution.Thenumberofbacteriapresentinthisliquidisdetermined,andthepercentagereductionbythetreatedspecimeniscalculated.

3.Terminology

3.1activity,n.—ofanantibacterialagent,ameasureofeffectivenessoftheagent.

3.2antibacterialagent,n.一intextiles,anychemicalwhichkillsbacteria（bactericide）orinterfereswiththemultiplication,growthoractivityofbacteria（bacteriostat）.

4.SafetyPrecautions

NOTE:

Thesesafetyprecautionsareforinformationpurposesonly.Theprecautionsareancillarytothetestingproceduresandarenotintendedtobeallinclusive.Itistheuser'

sresponsibilitytousesafeandpropertechniquesinhandlingmaterialsinthistestmethod.ManufacturersMUSTbeconsultedforspecificdetailssuchasmaterialsafetydatasheetsandothermanufacturer'

srecommendations.AllOSHAstandardsandrulesmustalsobeconsultedandfollowed.

4.1Boththequalitativeandquantitativetestsshouldbecarriedoutbypersonswithtrainingandexperienceintheuseofbacteriologicaltechniques.TheU.S.DepartmentofHealthandHumanServicespublication,BiosafetyinMicrobiologicalandBiomedicalLaboratories,shouldbeconsulted（see13.1）.

4.2CAUTION:

Someofthebacteriausedinthistestarecapableofinfectinghumansandproducingdisease.Therefore,everynecessaryandreasonableprecautionmustbetakentoeliminatethisrisktothelaboratorypersonnelandtopersonnelintheassociatedenvironment.Wearprotectiveclothingandrespiratoryprotectionthatpreventspenetrationbythebacteria.

4.3Goodlaboratorypracticesshouldbefollowed.Wearsafetyglassesinalllaboratoryareas.

4.4Allchemicalsshouldbehandledwithcare.

4.5Aneyewash/safetyshowershouldbelocatednearbyforemergencyuse.

4.6Sterilizeallcontaminatedsamplesandtestmaterialspriortodisposal.

4.7Exposuretochemicalsusedinthisproceduremustbecontrolledatorbelowlevelssetbygovernmentauthorities（e.g.,OccupationalSafetyandHealthAdministration'

s[OSHA]permissibleexposurelimits[PEL]asfoundin29CFR1910.1000ofJanuary1,1989）.Inaddition,theAmericanConferenceofGovernmentalIndustrialHygienists（ACGIH）ThresholdLimitValues（TLVs）comprisedoftimeweightedaverages（TUATWA）,shorttermexposurelimits（TLV-STEL）andceilinglimits（TLV-C）arerecommendedasageneralguideforaircontaminantexposurewhichshouldbemet（see13.2）.

5.Limitations
