ThisAGAReportNo.8,Part1,providesallofthetechnicalinformationnecessarytocomputethermodynamicpropertiesincludingcompressibilityfactors,densities,andspeedsofsoundfornaturalgasandrelatedgases.Historicaldocumentationlinkingtheseequationsandcalculationstopriormethodsareincluded.Thedocumentalsoprovidesanalysesofcalculationuncertaintiesforvariousgascompositions.ItisbasedonresearchmanagedandsponsoredbytheGasResearchInstitute(GRI)andtheGroupeEuropeendeRecherchesGazieres(GERG)incooperationwithAGA.Itsupersedesthe1985,1992,and1994editionsofAGAReportNumber8,andgivesidenticalresultstotheInternationalStandardsOrganizationDocumentISO12213,NaturalGas-CalculationofCompressionFactors.Nochangesweremadetotheparametersusedtocalculatethecompressibilityfactor;
therefore,nochangeisrequiredfromthe1994editiontomaintainthestatedaccuracywhenaparticulargasfallswithinthenewuncertaintystatementslistedherein.
Thedocumentationofprogramsforcalculatingpropertiesfromtheequationsofstatedescribedinthisworkhasbeenmovedtosupplementarymaterialforthisstandard.Newexampleprograms,availableinthesupplementarymaterial,areavailableinFortran,VB,andC++.ThesupplementarymaterialalsocontainsaMicrosoftExcelspreadsheettocalculateproperties.Afilecontainingcalculatedpointsisincludedthatcanbeusedtoverifythatanyimplementationproducesvaluesthatareinagreementwiththisstandard.Manypointsaregivenatdifferentcompositions(notnecessarilyrelatedtotypicalnaturalgases)totestthatthecoefficientsandparametersforeachcomponenthavebeenappliedcorrectly.
TheAGA-10publicationonthecalculationofthespeedofsoundhasbeendiscontinuedwiththereleaseofthisrevisionofAGA-8.Thecalculationofallthermodynamicpropertiesisfullydocumentedhere.ThecalculationsdescribedinthisworknolongerrequireintegrationofthecompressibilityfactorequationasdoneinAGA-10,butisimplementedthroughdifferentiationofthefundamentalHelmholtzenergyequationofstate.Thisresultsinfastercalculationsthroughdirectcomputationoftherequiredderivatives.
Implementationdecisionsarelefttotheuser;
however,thecalculationmethodchosenfordensityandcompressibilityfactorscanbereinforcedbytheuncertaintystatementsandexamplecalculationscontainedherein.Adoptionofthesenewguidelinesandequationsisencouragedforallgasmeasurementapplications.
