Abstract
Bigdatahasbeenconsideredtobeabreakthroughtechnologicaldevelopmentoverrecentyears.Notwithstanding,wehaveasyetlimitedunderstandingofhoworganizationstranslateitspotentialintoactualsocialandeconomicvalue.Weconductanin-depthsystematicreviewofISliteratureonthetopicandidentifysixdebatescentraltohoworganizationsrealizevaluefrombigdata,atdifferentlevelsofanalysis.Basedonthisreview,weidentifytwosocio-technicalfeaturesofbigdatathatinfluencevaluerealization:
portabilityandinterconnectivity.Wearguethat,inpractice,organizationsneedtocontinuouslyrealignworkpractices,organizationalmodels,andstakeholderinterestsinordertoreapthebenefitsfrombigdata.Wesynthesizethefindingsbymeansofanintegratedmodel.

Introduction
Bigdatahasgainedsignificantimpetusasabreakthroughtechnologicaldevelopment(Fichmanetal.,2014)inacademicandbusinesscommunities(Chenetal.,2012).Bigdatacanbedefinedbasedonlarge
volumes
ofextensively
varied
datathataregenerated,captured,andprocessedathigh
velocity
(Laney,2001).Assuch,thesedataaredifficulttoprocessusingexistingtechnologies(ConstantiouandKallinikos,2015).Byadoptingadvancedanalyticstechnologies,organizationscanusebigdatafordevelopinginnovativeinsights,products,andservices(Davenportetal.,2012).
Theopportunitiesarisingfrombigdataanalytics1
fororganizationsareconsideredpivotal:
bigdatahasbeendescribedas,“themotherlodeofdisruptivechangeinanetworkedbusinessenvironment”(Baesensetal.,2014,p.629).Byadoptingbigdatatechnologies,organizationsexpecttogainbenefitsacrossmanydomains,suchase-commerce,e-government,science,health,andsecurity(Chenetal.,2012).Whatbenefitsorganizationsperceiveas“value”dependsontheirstrategicgoalsforadoptingandusingbigdata(Ghoshaletal.,2014).
Inthispaper,werefertobothsocialandeconomicvalue.Socialvalueincludesimprovedsocialwellbeinginfieldssuchaseducation(Cechetal.,2015),healthcare(RaghupathiandRaghupathi,2014),andpublicsafetyandsecurity(NewellandMarabelli,2015).Governments,forinstance,canusebigdatato,“enhancetransparency,increasecitizenengagementinpublicaffairs,preventfraudandcrime,improvenationalsecurity,andsupportthewellbeingofpeoplethroughbettereducationandhealthcare”(Kimetal.,2014,p.81).Thus,socialvaluecomprisesbenefitsforsingleusersaswellaslargersocietalbenefitssuchasemploymentgrowth,productivity,andconsumersurplus(LoebbeckeandPicot,2015).
Economicvaluecanbemeasuredbyanorganization'
sincreaseinprofit,businessgrowth,andcompetitiveadvantageresultingfrombigdataadoption(Davenport,2006;
Davis,2014;
Tyagi,2003).Economicvalueoftencomprisesmonetarybenefitsthatareappropriatedbyorganizations.Forexample,organizationsthatrelyonbigdatatoguideorganizationalstrategiesandday-to-dayoperationsareexpectedtoperformbetterfinanciallythanorganizationsthatdonot(LaValleetal.,2011;
McAfeeandBrynjolfsson,2012).
Ingeneral,bigdataisperceivedasasourceofinnovativeproducts,services,andbusinessopportunities.Moreover,bigdataisbelievedtoresultinmoreefficientandeffectiveoperationsby,forexample,optimizingsupplychainflows;
settingthemostprofitablepriceforproductsandservices;
selectingtherightpeopleforcertaintasksandjobs;
minimizingerrorsandqualityproblems,andimprovingcustomerrelationships.Additionally,furthereconomicandsocialvaluecanbegainedfrombigdatathroughenhanceddecisionmaking(Sharmaetal.,2014)andmoreinformedstrategizing(ConstantiouandKallinikos,2015).
Inourstudy,weperformedareviewofISliteraturethatdiscussesorganizationalchanges,drivers,andactionsrelatedtobigdatavaluerealizationatdifferentlevelsofanalysis.Werespondtothecallforfocusingonthetensionsorganizationsfaceinrealizingvaluefrombigdata(Galliersetal.,2015).Ourcontributionisthreefold.First,weidentifyatotalofsixdebatescentraltohoworganizationsrealizevaluefrombigdata,atthework-practice,organizational,andsupra-organizationallevels.Wecallforempiricalstudiestoshowwhen,if,andhowtheopposingpositionsofeachdebatearerelevant.Second,weidentifyp
