TheStanfordUniversityresearchersobservedthebrainactivityof28studentsaged7to9forthestudy.Theytookscansofthestudents’brainsasthestudentssolvedmathcalculationswithoutthehelpofacalculator,penorpaper.Acalculation—threeplusfourequalsseven,forexample—flashedonascreen.Thestudentspushedabuttontosayiftheanswerwasrightorwrong.Thescientistsalsorecordedtheresponsespeed,andwhatpartsofthebrainbecameactiveasthekidspushedthebutton.

Theseobservationsshowedaprocesscalledfactretrieval(事实检索).Ratherthanusingtheirfingerstocount,orwritingoutanswersonapieceofpaper,thestudentspulledtheanswersfrommemory.It’sasiftheanswerstobasicmathproblemsarekeptinalong-termstorageareainthebrain,whichwasbuiltfromrepetition.“Experiencereallydoesmatter,”saidDr.KathyMannKoepeke.

Childrenmaketheshift(转换)fromcountingtofactretrievalwhentheyare8to9yearsold,thestudyshows.Thisisthetimewhenmoststudentsarelearningbasicadditionandsubtraction.Whenkidshavebasicmathfactsmemorized,thebrainhasmorefreespacetolearnmorecomplicatedmath.

Thisprocesshasbenefitsforthefuture.Thestudyshowsaskidsgrowolder,theiranswersrelymoreonmemoryandbecomequickerandmoreaccurate.Lessbrainactivityisdevotedtocounting.Somechildrenmakethisshiftquickerthanothers.
