  Theintroductionofcomputerizedinformationsystemshassharplychangedmanagementcontrolinmanycompanies.Evenaneighborhoodshopkeepermaynowusecomputerstocontrolsales,billing,andotheractivities.Inlargecompanies,electronicdataprocessingsystemsmonitorentireprojectsandsetsofoperations.

  Now,thereareabout24millionmicrocomputersinuseintheUnitedStates——oneforevery10citizens.Itisestimatedthatby1996,61percentofAmericanmanagerswillbeusingsomesortofelectronicworkstation.Inorderformanagerstobesurethatthecomputer-basedinformationtheyarereceivingisaccurate,theyneedtounderstandhowcomputerswork.However,inmostcasestheydonotneedtolearnhowtoprogramcomputers.Rather,managersshouldunderstandhowcomputerizedinformationsystemswork;howtheyaredeveloped;theirlimitationsandcosts;andthemannerinwhichinformationsystemsmaybeused.Suchanunderstandingisnotdifficulttoachieve.
