Theanimal—whichmeasuresroughly25feet（8meters）long—wasphotographed2，950feet（900meters）beneaththeNorthPacificOcean.Japanesescientistsattractedthesquidtowardcamerasattachedtoabaitedfishingline.

Thescientistssaytheysnappedmorethan500imagesofthemassivecephalopodbeforeitbrokefreeaftersnaggingitselfonahook.Theyalsorecoveredoneofthegiantsquid’stwolongesttentacles，whichseveredduringitsstruggle.

TheJapaneseresearchersusedspermwhalesasguidestohelpthempinpointlikelygiantsquidhaunts.Overtheyearswhalershavereportedfindingahighnumberoflargesquidbeaksinthemammals’stomachs，peggingspermwhalesasprimarypredatorsoflargesquid.

Theimagesaregeneratingconsiderableexcitementamongsquidexperts.

“Ithinkit‘swonderfulthatwe’vefinallygotapictureofalivinggiantsquid，”saidRichardEllis，aresearchassociateattheAmericanMuseumofNaturalHistoryinNewYorkandauthorofTheSearchfortheGiantSquid.

“IthoughtitwouldonlybeamatteroftimebeforesomeonegotimagesofArchiteuthis，”headded.

“Afterall，it‘snotanendangeredspecies，notevenallthatrare，andit’soneofthelargestofallinvertebrates.SotheJapanesefilmfinalybreaksthroughandrendersthestatement‘nobodyhaseverseenalivinggiantsquid’inoperative.”

SquidexpertMartinCollinsoftheBritishAntarcticSurveybasedinCambridge，England，saysthenewimagesarea“fantastic”achievement.

Themarinebiologistsayshewasskepticalthatadedicatedgiantsquidhuntwouldsucceed.Hethoughtthefirstwildsightingwouldprobablycomebyaccident.

“Fairplaytotheseguyswho‘vemadetheeffort，goneoutthereandlookedinwhattheythoughtwasagoodarea，andfoundit，”hesaid.

HuntingforClues

Collinsisespeciallyinterestedincluestheimagesmightprovidetothewaygiantsquidswimandhuntinthedeepocean.

“Seeingtheanimalsonfilmgivesyouatremendousinsightintohowtheylivedownthere，”hesaid.“Itshowstheyareprettyactiveanimals，andthatanswersabigquestionthat’sbeenoutthereforsometime.”

Collinssaysthereweretwocompetingschoolsofthoughtamonggiantsquidexperts.

“Onewastheideathat［giantsquid］werefairlyinactiveandjustdriftedaround，danglingtheirtentaclesbelowthemlikefishinglurestocatchwhatcameby，”hesaid.

“Theothertheorywasthattheywereactuallyquiteactive.Thisnewevidencesupportsthis，suggestingtheyareactivepredatorswhichcanmovereasonablyquickly.”

“Theeffortsthesquidwenttountangleitself［fromthebaitedfishingline］alsoshowstheyarecapableofquitestrongandrapidmovement，”headded.

Thestudyteamreportsthattheseveredtentaclerepeatedlygrippedtheboatdeckandcrewafteritwashauledaboard.Thesquid‘stentaclesarearmedwithsuckers，eachringedwithtinyteethtohelpsnareprey.

Measuring18feet（5.5meters）long，analysisofthetentacleconfirmeditcamefromagiantsquidandallowedtheresearcherstoestimatethetotallengthoftheanimal.

Buttheresearcherscautionthattheirdataassumethetentaclewasseveredatitbase.Ifnot，thesquidmayhavebeenconsiderablylarger.Thelongestgiantsquidonrecordmeasured59feet（18meters），includingitstwoelongatedtentacles.

SheddingLightonGiantSquid

Giantsquid，alongwiththeirclosecousinscolossalsquid（Mesonychoteuthis），havethelargesteyesofanyanimal.

“Giantsquiddohaveparticularlylargeeyes，whichwouldsuggestvisionisimportanttothem.Havingalargeeyeisn’tunusualindeep-seaanimals-youseeitquiteofteninfish.”

Thefactthattheanimalcaughtonfilmwasswimmingintotaldarknesssuggeststhespeciesdetectspreyusingalternativelightsources.“Theonlylightdownthereislikelytobelightproducedbyotheranimals，”saidCollinsoftheBritishAntarcticSurvey.

TheJapaneseteamthinksthatresearchtechniquessimilartotheirowncouldbeusedtobringaboutmorecloseencounterswithgiantsquid.EllisoftheAmericanMuseumofNaturalHistoryagrees.
