Darwin’sfrogsareafamilyofsmallfrogsfoundonthesouthwestcoastofSouthAmerica.TheywerenamedafterCharlesDarwin,whohappenedtoseeoneofthetwospeciesin1834.Thesecreaturesusuallyreachasizeofonly3cminlength.Theyaremostlygreenfrogs,andhavelong,narrownoses.Whenthreatened,theyrolloverandplaydeaduntilthedangerhaspassed,lookinglikedeadleaves.

Darwin’sfrogsaretheonlyknownspeciesoffrogswheremalescanget“pregnant”.Theyswallowtheirbabiesintotheirvocalsacs,protectingthemfromenemiesuntiltheyhavebecomefullygrown.Butnothingcanprotectthemfromadeadlyfungus,whichhashelpedpushoneofthetwospeciesofthesefrogstoprobableextinction,anddrivenadeclineinthesecondvariety,newresearchshows.

Researcherslookedatmuseumspecimensofbothspeciesandfoundthatthefungusstartedshowingupintheseandotherfrogsinthe1970s,aboutwhenpopulationsofbothbegantodecline,accordingtoastudypublishedinthejournalPLOSONE.Oneofthespecies,thenorthernDarwin’sfrog,hasn’tbeenseensince1980andislikelyextinct.“Thefungusisprobablythemainreasonforthefrog’sdisappearance,”saidMarcusRowcliffe,aresearcherattheZoologicalSocietyofLondon.

ThesouthernDarwin’sfrogisstillaround,buthasdeclinedfasterthanpreviouslythoughtinrecentyears.Theresearchersfoundthatasmallpercentageofthemwereinfectedwiththefungus,althoughatlowerratesthanotherspecies.Thiscouldmeanthatthefungusmoreeasilykillsthem.TheyalsofoundthatpopulationsofDarwin’sfrogswerelowerinareaswithhigherratesoffungalinfection.In2007,30wildsouthernDarwin’sfrogswerecaughttoberaisedinGermany,butallofthemdiedfromthefungus.TheInternationalUnionforConservationofNature,anenvironmentalgroup,calledthefungustheworstinfectiousdiseaseeverrecordedamonganimalswithbackbones.
