JazzisAmerican'scontributiontopopularmusic.WhileclassicalmusicfollowsformalEuropeantradition,jazzisaratherfreeform.Itisfullofenergy,expressingthemoods,interests,andemotionsofthepeople.Inthe1920sjazzsoundedlikeAmerica.Andsoitdoestoday.

Theoriginsofjazzareasinterestingasthemusicitself.JazzwasinventedbyblackAmericans,whowerebroughttothesouthernstatesasslaves.Theyweresoldtofarmownersandforcedtoworklonghoursinthecottonandtobaccofields.Theworkwashardandlifewasshort,Whenaslaverdiedhisfriendsandrelativeswouldgatherandcarrythebodytohaveaceremonybeforetheyburiedhim.
