2）CharlieDarwin（1808-1882）Britishnaturalist.TheOriginofSpecieswaspublishedin1859.Itexplainedhowplantsandanimalshadchangedovertimetofitinwithachangingenvironment.Hisbookshowedthatpeoplehaddevelopedfromapes.

3）GregorMendel（1822—1884）Czech.Thefatherofgenetic.Hegrewpeaplantsanddevelopedideasonheredity（遗传）andinheritedcharacteristics.Between1856—1863hegrew28,000peaplants.Heexaminedsevenkindsofseedandplantcharacteristicsanddevelopedsomelawsofinheritance.

4）MarieCurie（Polish）（1867-1934）wasborninPoland,movedtoParisandstudiedchemistryandphysicsthere.ShemarriedPierreCurieandtogethertheystudiedradioactivematerialsanddiscoveredradium.In1911shereceivedtheNobelPrizeinChemistry.Herdeathin1934wasalmostcertainlyduetoradiationinherwork.

5）ThomasEdison（1847----1931）Hewasalreadyaninventorofotherelectricaldevices（phonograph,electriclightbulb）whenin1882hedesignedasystemforprovidingNewYorkwithelectricityfromacentralpowerstation.Thiswasatremendousachievement,whichhadpreviouslybeenthoughtimpossible.

6）LeonardodaVinci（Italian）（1452-1519）HewasafamousItalianartistwhoseskillforshowinghumanskintonesmadehispaintingsseemtocomealive.Heusedtostudydeadpeopleinordertomakehispaintingsasaccurateaspossible.Someofhisfamouspaintingsinclude“TheAdorationoftheMagi”andthe“TheLastSupper”.LaterinhislifehelivedinFrancewherehedesignedasubmarine（潜水艇）andaflyingmachine.

7）British.Hedidresearchintodifferentgasesanddiscoveredthemedicalvalueofnitrousoxide（laughinggas）asananaesthetic.（麻醉药）In1815hedevelopedasafetylampforminers.

8）ZhangHeng,Chinese（78-----139）Heinventedthefirstseismographtoindicateinthedirectionofanearthquake.Itwasintheshapeofacylinderwitheightdragonheadsroundthetop,eachwithaballinitsmouth.Aroundthebottomwereeightfrogsdirectlyunderadragon’shead.Whenanearthquakeoccurred,aballfelloutofthedragon’smouth,makinganoise.

9）StephenHawking,British（1942---）Hehasworkedinastronomyandstudiedblackholesinspace.Hehasshownthatblackholesdonotonlyabsorbeverythingaroundthembut,fromtimetotime,throwoutmatteraswell.Thismaymarkthebeginningofnewgalaxies.Thisisanadvanceontheoldtheorywhichsaidthatblackholes“eat”everythingtheycomeacross.
