  temples.

  AlegendclaimsthatthemountainwaswhereSamantabhadragavelecturesonBuddhismandmosttempleshouseastatueof

  Samantabhadra.ThemainscenicspotsonthemountainincludetheBaoguoTemple,WannianTemple,Fohutemple,QingyinPavilion,HeilongjiangTunnel,HongchunPlatform,XianfengTemple(JiulaoCave),XixiangPondandGolden

  Summit.Theseplacesareatdifferentaltitudesandhavedifferent

  climates.Temperaturesatthetopofmountainare15degreeslowerthanatthe

  foot.EmeiMountainisawell-knownnaturalmuseumwithmorethan3,000specimensofplantsand2,000typesofanimalsincludinggroupsofmonkeysthatappearonthemountainroadsandfascinatethe

  tourists.

  BaoguoTemplesitsatthefootofthemountainattheentranceandexitofthemountain

  area.ThetemplewasbuiltduringthereignofMingEmperorWanli(1573——1620).About15kilometersfromtheBaoguoTempleisWannianTemple,oneofthemaintemplesinthemountain

  area.WannianTemple,ortheTempleofSamantabhadraasitwasknownbeforetheMingDynasty,wasbuiltduringthereignofEmperorLong’anoftheEasternJindynasty(397——401).IthasnobeamsandhousesabronzestatueofBuddhaSamantabhadramountedonasix-toothedwhiteelephantcastin1980,thefifthyearoftheNorthernSong

  Dynasty.Thestatueis7.3metershighandweighs62

  tons.XianfengTempleissituatedathefootoftheJiulaoPeakandtheoldhallswerebuiltwithtinsheetsandiron

  tiles.Theintacthallswererebuiltin

  1779.FohuTempleislocatedonekilometerwestofBaoguoTempleandatthefootofFohu

  Hill.Itisoneofthelargesttempleinthemountain

  area.Rebuiltin1651,itcoversanareaof13,000squaremetersandisaccessiblefromthe

  highway.AttheGoldenSummit,thepinnacleofthemountainarea3,065metersabovesealevel,isPuguangHallof

  Temple.ItwasconstructedduringtheEasternHanDynastyandhasbeenrebuiltseveraltimesafterbeingstruckby

  lightning.TheGoldenSummitisanidealplacetoviewthesunrise,theseaofclouds,the“Buddhistlights”and“Sacredlamps”.

  TheGiantBuddhaontheeastbankofMingjiangRiverinLeshanCity,SichuanProvince,restshisfeetwherethreerivers——theMinjiang,QingyiandDadu——join.TheBuddhafacesEmeiMountainacrosstheriverandatitsbackisthewesternslopeofLingyun

  Buddha.ItwasrenamedastheLingyunPavilionwith13storiesduringtheSong

  TheGiantBuddhahaslastedoverathousandyears,andstillsurvivesingood

  shape.Why?

  Firstofall,accordingtothestudiesontheancientconstructionoftheBuddha,theclifffacetheBuddhaoccupiesenjoystopographical

  advantages.Itisonthesouthernsideofthehill,whereverdanttreesgrowsowellastoprotectrocksandslopefrom

  erosion.SecondlyalthoughtheBuddhaseatsborderingontheconfluenceofthethreerivers,theimmensestatueiscarvedintotheclifffaceinsidethehill,whichalleviatetheseveredamagebywindandwater

  erosion.Finallythereisawater-drainagesystem,hiddenfrom

  view.Thesystemstartswith1021fastenedhairs,whichconectoneanotheratthebaceofthebead.Theendofthehairsinter-linkstheshoulders,joiningthesimple-patternedrobepleatscarvedonthe

  body.Thehairs,shouldersandpleatsnaturallyrevealacnpletesystemthatcarriesawaytheentiresurfacewateronthebody,wherethewaterdisappears
