MartinLutherKingwasborninAtlanta,Georgia,in1929.Hebeganhisuniversitystudieswhenhewasfifteenyearsold,andreceivedadoctorsdegreeinreligion.
In1955,ablackwomaninMontgomerywasarrestedforsittinginthewhitepartofacitybus.DoctorKingbecametheleaderofaprotestagainstthecitybussystem.Itwasthefirsttimethatblacksouthernershadunitedagainstthelawsofracialseparation.
Atfirst,thewhitecitizensofMontgomerydidnotbelievethattheprotestwouldwork.Theythoughtmostblackswouldbeafraidtofightagainstracialseparation.Butthebusesremainedempty.Somewhitesusedtrickstotrytoendtheprotest.
TheyspreadfalsestoriesaboutMartinLutherKingandotherprotestleaders.OnestoryaccusedKingofstealingmoneyfromthecivilrightsmovement.Anotherstorychargedthatprotestleadersrodeincarswhileotherprotestershadtowalk.Butthetricksdidnotwork,andtheprotestcontinued.
Itlastedthreehundredandeighty-twodays.Finally,theUnitedStatesSupremeCourtruledthatracialseparationwasillegalintheMontgomerybussystem.
