Thegoalsandpurposesforcloningrangefrommakingcopiesofthosethathavedeceasedtobetterengineeringtheoffspringinhumansandanimals.Cloningcouldalsodirectlyofferameansofcuringdiseasesoratechniquethatcouldextendmeanstoacquiringnewdataforthesciencesofembryologyandhoworganismsdevelopasawholeovertime.Currently,theagriculturalindustrydemandsnucleartransfertoproducebetterlivestock.Cloningcouldmassivelyimprovetheagriculturalindustryasthetechniqueofnucleartransferimproves.Thegoaloftransgeniclivestockistoproducelivestockwithidealcharacteristicsfortheagriculturalindustryandtobeabletomanufacturebiologicalproductssuchasproteinsforhumans.Researcherscanharvestandgrowadultcellsinlargeamountscomparedtoembryos.Scientistscanthengeneticallyalterthesecellsandfindwhichonesdidtransformandthencloneonlythosecells.

Whyshouldwenotusecloning?

Thebiggestproblemwiththeuseofcloningonalargescaleisthedeclineingeneticdiversity.Thinkaboutit,ifeveryonehasthesamegeneticmaterial,whathappensifwelosetheabilitytoclone.Wewouldhavetoresorttonaturalreproduction,causingustoinbreed,whichwillcausemanyproblems.Also,ifapopulationoforganismshasthesamegeneticinformation,thenthediseasewouldwipeouttheentirepopulation.Helpingendangeredspeciesbycloningwillnothelptheproblem.Currently,zoologistsandenvironmentaliststryingtosaveendangeredspeciesarenotsomuchhavingtroublekeepingpopulationnumbersup,butnothavinganyanimalstobreedthatarenotcousins.Thetechniqueofnucleartransferisalsoearlyinitsdevelopmentalstages.Thus,errorsareoccurringwhenscientistscarryouttheprocedure.Forinstance,ittook277triestoproduceDolly,andRoslinscientistsproducedmanylambswithabnormalities.Ifwetriedtocloneendangeredspecieswecouldpossiblykillthelastfemalesintegraltothesurvivalofaspecies.Thismaybethemainreasonscienceisholdingoutoncloninghumans.
