Whyshouldwenotusecloning?
Thebiggestproblemwiththeuseofcloningonalargescaleisthedeclineingeneticdiversity.Thinkaboutit,ifeveryonehasthesamegeneticmaterial,whathappensifwelosetheabilitytoclone.Wewouldhavetoresorttonaturalreproduction,causingustoinbreed,whichwillcausemanyproblems.Also,ifapopulationoforganismshasthesamegeneticinformation,thenthediseasewouldwipeouttheentirepopulation.Helpingendangeredspeciesbycloningwillnothelptheproblem.Currently,zoologistsandenvironmentaliststryingtosaveendangeredspeciesarenotsomuchhavingtroublekeepingpopulationnumbersup,butnothavinganyanimalstobreedthatarenotcousins.Thetechniqueofnucleartransferisalsoearlyinitsdevelopmentalstages.Thus,errorsareoccurringwhenscientistscarryouttheprocedure.Forinstance,ittook277triestoproduceDolly,andRoslinscientistsproducedmanylambswithabnormalities.Ifwetriedtocloneendangeredspecieswecouldpossiblykillthelastfemalesintegraltothesurvivalofaspecies.Thismaybethemainreasonscienceisholdingoutoncloninghumans.
Otherargumentsforcloningincludeifwearetakingnatureintoourownhandsbycloninganimalsorpeople.Peoplequestionwhenwewilldrawthelineforgettinginvolvedinnaturalevents.Religiousorganizationsconsidernucleartransfertocausementobereproductivelyobsolete.Thisclaimwasdeducedbygatheringoftheinformationthatcloningrequiresonlyoocytes,anycell,andawomantodevelopin.Theyalsoclaimthatcloningdoesnotrespectthefactthathumanshavesouls.Theyalsoconsidercloningunnatural,andsaywearetakingtheworkofGodintoourownhands.Thereisalsoadebateastothemoralrightsofclones.Somesaytheirrightswillbedefiedbecauseclonesarenotgrantedthebirthofnewness.Wewouldnotreceivecloneswithsuchexcitementasachildofacouplewhoconceivednaturally.Ifnaturalreproductionweretooccur,geneticvariationwouldoccur.Theysaycloningwoulddepriveapersonofuniqueness.Theyarguethatidenticaltwinsarenotuniquefromeachother,butthattheyarenewingeneticvariationanduniquefromanythingthatcamebeforethem.Peoplealsowonderwhatmentalandemotionalproblemswouldresultifaclonewastofindoutthatheorshewascloned.
