BiodiversityUnitGroup

Thebiodiversityunitisanelementofnaturaldiversitythatisdescribedforconservationpurposes.Differenttypesofbiodiversityunitshavebeenidentifiedinthemodel,rangingfromorganismsandcommunitiestodefinedareas.Characteristicsofbiodiversityunits,suchasconservationstatusandeconomicvalue,areincorporatedintheBiodiversityUnitClass.Abiodiversityunitcanbedescribedbyoneormorenames;similarly,aparticularnamecanbeassociatedwithmorethanonebiodiversityunit.Informationonnames(e.g.,thehierarchytowhichitbelongs)isincludedintheNameClass.Dataonbiodiversityunitsisobtainedthroughdiscreteobservations,whichcanbeusedtodefinebroaderdistributions.

ObservationsGroup

DetailedinformationonsightingsofbiodiversityunitsisdocumentedinclassesintheObservationsGroup.Observationsofbiodiversityunitscanbecomprisedofmultiplesightings(registrations)thatoccurduringthesameperiodoftime.Descriptionsoftheobservation,aswellasdataontheobservationmethodsandlocation(e.g.,physicalandenvironmentalconditions)areincludedintheObservationOrInformationClass.Datarelatedtotheperson(s)thatmadeobservations(suchas,contactinformationandcredentials)isrecordedintheObserverGroupClass.TheQualityClassisusedforindicatingthevalue/validityofobservationinformation,alongwiththecredentialsofthepersonthatmadethequalityassessment.

Registrationdataforindividualsighting(s)thatmaycompriseanobservation(suchaswhetherthedataresultedfromapositivesightingorconfirmedabsence)isincorporatedintheRegistrationClass.Registrationscanbemadeforspeciesand/ornonspeciesentities.Informationcollected(e.g.,count,andpopulationstructure)foraparticularregistrationofaspeciesbiodiversityunitisincludedintheSpeciesGroupClass.Typesofnonspeciesentitiesidentifiedinthemodelarehabitat,process,ecosystem,andthreat;descriptiveinformationontheseentitiesisincorporatedintheNonSpeciesEntityClass.

DistributionGroup

Distributionfeaturesaredevelopedtorepresentthelocationandextentofbiodiversityunitsforspecifiedperiodsoftime,insomecasesdeterminedonthebasisofobservationdata.Fourgeneraltypesofdistributionfeatureshavebeenidentifiedinthemodel:

known,potential,predicted,andhistorical.Specificdataonthestatusofabiodiversityunitduringadesignatedtimeperiod(e.g.,numberofindividuals,successionalstage)isincludedintheDistribution(feature)Class,alongwithdescriptionsofthedistributionareaandmethodsusedfordeterminingitslocation.

Additionalinformationrelatedtooneormoredistributionfeaturesiscontainedinfourseparateclassesthatareassociatedwiththefeature(s)throughtheDistributionObjectClass,whichdesignatesspecifictimeperiodsforeachsetofinformation.Datadescribingnaturallyoccurringconditions(suchashabitatandprocesses)intheareasassociatedwithdistributionfeaturesisincludedintheBiologicalContextClass.ThePhysicalContextClasscapturesdatarelatedtothephysicalcharacteristicsofdistributionareas,includingelevation,microclimate,andprocesses.ConditionsthatresultfromconservationactionsareincorporatedintheConservationContextClass.DistributionTrendisthefinalentityrelatedtodistributionfeaturesthroughtheDistributionObjectClass,anddiffersfromthethreecontextclassesinthattheattributesprovideinformationonchangesinthebiodiversityunititselfovertime,suchasvariationsinthenumberofindividualsorthesuccessionalstage.

AreaGroup

Areasaregeographicfeaturesthatintersectthelocationsofbiodiversityunits,representedasdistributions.Twotypesofareashavebeenidentifiedinthemodel–administrativeareasandnaturebasedareas–dependingonhowtheboundariesaredetermined.Inaddition,timeperiodsthatdescribewhentheseareasareineffectmaybespecifiedinarelatedAreaClass.Administrativeareasaredefinedbyanagencyforaparticularprojectorpurpose,andincludesuchtypesasresearch,management,planning,andmitigation.Nature-basedareasaredelineatedonthebasisofnaturalfeatures,suchaswatersheds,stopovers,islands,andecoregions.Pertinentinformation,includingbiodiversitysignificance,disturbance,andconservationgoalsandpriorities,isincorporatedintheAdministrativeAreaandNatureBasedAreaClasses.Variousothergeopoliticalareasarerecognizedbutnotdefinedinthemodel(e.g.,soil,climate,political,landuse);thesegeographicdatasetswillbeobtainedfromexternaldataproviders.
