ResearchersfromtheUniversityofChicagoaskedvolunteerstoremembersimplewords.Manyfoundtheirmemorieslettingthemdowntowardstheendoftheday,butthefollowingmorning,thosewhohadsleptwellcouldremembermuchmore.

  Researchers,writinginthejournalNature,saidthebraincould“rescue”lostmemoriesduringthenight.

  Whenthebrainisfirstaskedtoremembersomething,thatmemoryislaiddowninan“unstable”state,whichmeansitispossiblethatitcouldbelost.

Atsomepoint,thebrainconsolidates(强化)thosewhicharethoughtimportantintoa“stable”,morepermanentstate.

However,theChicagoresearcherssuggestedthatitwaspossiblefora“stable”memorytobemade“unstable”again.Thiswouldmeanthatmemoriescouldbeslightlychangedandthenbekeptinaneworderagaininthefaceofnewexperiences.

  The12volunteerswhoweretestedintheexperimentwereaskedtolistentowordscreatedthroughaspeechsynthesizer(语音合成器)whichwerepurposelydifficulttounderstand.

  Attheverybeginning,thewrittenversionofthewordwasavailable,butafterwardsthevolunteerswereaskedtoidentifythewordjustdependingonthesoundtheyheard.
