Myfellowcitizens:

Istandheretodayhumbledbythetaskbeforeus,gratefulforthetrustyou'vebestowed,mindfulofthesacrificesbornebyourancestors.

IthankPresidentBushforhisservicetoournation--（applause）--aswellasthegenerosityandcooperationhehasshownthroughoutthistransition.

Forty-fourAmericanshavenowtakenthepresidentialoath.Thewordshavebeenspokenduringrisingtidesofprosperityandthestillwatersofpeace.Yet,everysooften,theoathistakenamidstgatheringcloudsandragingstorms.Atthesemoments,Americahascarriedonnotsimplybecauseoftheskillorvisionofthoseinhighoffice,butbecausewe,thepeople,haveremainedfaithfultotheidealsofourforebearsandtruetoourfoundingdocuments.

Soithasbeen;soitmustbewiththisgenerationofAmericans.

Thatweareinthemidstofcrisisisnowwellunderstood.Ournationisatwaragainstafar-reachingnetworkofviolenceandhatred.Oureconomyisbadlyweakened,aconsequenceofgreedandirresponsibilityonthepartofsome,butalsoourcollectivefailuretomakehardchoicesandpreparethenationforanewage.Homeshavebeenlost,jobsshed,businessesshuttered.Ourhealthcareistoocostly,ourschoolsfailtoomany--andeachdaybringsfurtherevidencethatthewaysweuseenergystrengthenouradversariesandthreatenourplanet.

Thesearetheindicatorsofcrisis,subjecttodataandstatistics.Lessmeasurable,butnolessprofound,isasappingofconfidenceacrossourland;anaggingfearthatAmerica'sdeclineisinevitable,thatthenextgenerationmustloweritssights.

TodayIsaytoyouthatthechallengeswefacearereal.Theyareseriousandtheyaremany.Theywillnotbemeteasilyorinashortspanoftime.ButknowthisAmerica:

Theywillbemet.（Applause.）

Onthisday,wegatherbecausewehavechosenhopeoverfear,unityofpurposeoverconflictanddiscord.Onthisday,wecometoproclaimanendtothepettygrievancesandfalsepromises,therecriminationsandworn-outdogmasthatforfartoolonghavestrangledourpolitics.Weremainayoungnation.ButinthewordsofScripture,thetimehascometosetasidechildishthings.Thetimehascometoreaffirmourenduringspirit;tochooseourbetterhistory;tocarryforwardthatpreciousgift,thatnobleideapassedonfromgenerationtogeneration:

theGod-givenpromisethatallareequal,allarefree,andalldeserveachancetopursuetheirfullmeasureofhappiness.（Applause.）

Inreaffirmingthegreatnessofournationweunderstandthatgreatnessisneveragiven.Itmustbeearned.Ourjourneyhasneverbeenoneofshort-cutsorsettlingforless.Ithasnotbeenthepathforthefaint-hearted,forthosethatpreferleisureoverwork,orseekonlythepleasuresofrichesandfame.Rather,ithasbeentherisk-takers,thedoers,themakersofthings--somecelebrated,butmoreoftenmenandwomenobscureintheirlabor--whohavecarriedusupthelongruggedpathtowardsprosperityandfreedom.

Forus,theypackeduptheirfewworldlypossessionsandtraveledacrossoceansinsearchofanewlife.Forus,theytoiledinsweatshops,andsettledtheWest,enduredthelashofthewhip,andplowedthehardearth.Forus,theyfoughtanddiedinplaceslikeConcordandGettysburg,NormandyandKheSahn.

Timeandagainthesemenandwomenstruggledandsacrificedandworkedtilltheirhandswererawsothatwemightliveabetterlife.TheysawAmericaasbiggerthanthesumofourindividualambitions,greaterthanallthedifferencesofbirthorwealthorfaction.

Thisisthejourneywecontinuetoday.Weremainthemostprosperous,powerfulnationonEarth.Ourworkersarenolessproductivethanwhenthiscrisisbegan.Ourmindsarenolessinventive,ourgoodsandservicesnolessneededthantheywerelastweek,orlastmonth,orlastyear.Ourcapacityremainsundiminished.Butourtimeofstandingpat,ofprotectingnarrowinterestsandputtingoffunpleasantdecisions--thattimehassurelypassed.Startingtoday,wemustpickourselvesup,dustourselvesoff,andbeginagaintheworkofremakingAmerica.（Applause.）

Foreverywherewelook,thereisworktobedone.Thestateofoureconomycallsforaction,boldandswift.Andwewillact,notonlytocreatenewjobs,buttolayanewfoundationforgrowth.Wewillbuildtheroadsandbridges,theelectricgridsanddigitallinesthatfeedourcommerceandbindustogether.We'llrestoresciencetoitsrightfulplace,andwieldtechnology'swonderstoraisehealthcare'squalityandloweritscost.Wewillharnessthesunandthewindsandthesoiltofuelourcarsandrunourfactories.Andwewilltransformourschoolsandcollegesanduniversitiestomeetthedemandsofanewage.Allthiswecando.Allthiswewilldo.

Now,therearesomewhoquestionthescaleofourambitions,whosuggestthatoursystemcannottoleratetoomanybigplans.Theirmemoriesareshort,fortheyhaveforgottenwhatthiscountryhasalreadydone,whatfreemenandwomencanachievewhenimaginationisjoinedtocommonpurpose,andnecessitytocourage.Whatthecynicsfailtounderstandisthatthegroundhasshiftedbeneaththem,thatthestalepoliticalargumentsthathaveconsumedusforsolongnolongerapply.

Thequestionweasktodayisnotwhetherourgovernmentistoobigortoosmall,butwhetheritworks--whetherithelpsfamiliesfindjobsatadecentwage,caretheycanafford,aretirementthatisdignified.Wheretheanswerisyes,weintendtomoveforward.Wheretheanswerisno,programswillend.Andthoseofuswhomanagethepublic'sdollarswillbeheldtoaccount,tospendwisely,reformbadhabits,anddoourbusinessinthelightofday,becauseonlythencanwerestorethevitaltrustbetweenapeopleandtheirgovernment.

Noristhequestionbeforeuswhetherthemarketisaforceforgoodorill.Itspowertogeneratewealthandexpandfreedomisunmatched.Butthiscrisishasremindedusthatwithoutawatchfuleye,themarketcanspinoutofcontrol.Thenationcannotprosperlongwhenitfavorsonlytheprosperous.Thesuccessofoureconomyhasalwaysdependednotjustonthesizeofourgrossdomesticproduct,butonthereachofourprosperity,ontheabilitytoextendopportunitytoeverywillingheart--notoutofcharity,butbecauseitisthesurestroutetoourcommongood.（Applause.）

Asforourcommondefense,werejectasfalsethechoicebetweenoursafetyandourideals.OurFoundingFathers--（applause）--ourFoundingFathers,facedwithperilsthatwecanscarcelyimagine,draftedachartertoassuretheruleoflawandtherightsofman--acharterexpandedbythebloodofgenerations.Thoseidealsstilllighttheworld,andwewillnotgivethemupforexpediencesake.（Applause.）

Andso,toalltheotherpeoplesandgovernmentswhoarewatchingtoday,fromthegrandestcapitalstothesmallvillagewheremyfatherwasborn,knowthatAmericaisafriendofeachnation,andeveryman,womanandchildwhoseeksafutureofpeaceanddignity.Andwearereadytoleadoncemore.（Applause.）

Recallthatearliergenerationsfaceddownfascismandcommunismnotjustwithmissilesandtanks,butwiththesturdyalliancesandenduringconvictions.Theyunderstoodthatourpoweralonecannotprotectus,nordoesitentitleustodoasweplease.Insteadtheyknewthatourpowergrowsthroughitsprudentuse;oursecurityemanatesfromthejustnessofourcause,theforceofourexample,thetemperingqualitiesofhumilityandrestraint.

Wearethekeepersofthislegacy.Guidedbytheseprinciplesoncemorewecanmeetthosenewthreatsthatdemandevengreatereffort,evengreatercooperationandunderstandingbetweennations.WewillbegintoresponsiblyleaveIraqtoitspeopleandforgeahard-earnedpeaceinAfghanistan.Witholdfriendsandformerfoes,we'llworktirelesslytolessenthenuclearthreat,androllbackthespecterofawarmingplanet.

Wewillnotapologizeforourwayoflife,norwillwewaverinitsdefense.Andforthosewhoseektoadvancetheiraimsbyinducingterrorandslaughteringinnocents,wesaytoyounowthatourspiritisstrongerandcannotbebroken--youcannotoutlastus,andwewilldefeatyou.（Applause.）

Forweknowthatourpatchworkheritageisastrength,notaweakness.WeareanationofChristiansandMuslims,JewsandHindus,andnon-believers.Weareshapedbyeverylanguageandculture,drawnfromeveryendofthisEarth;andbecausewehavetastedthebitterswillofcivilwarandsegregation,andemergedfromthatdarkchapterstrongerandmoreunited,wecannothelpbutbelievethattheoldhatredsshallsomedaypass;thatthelinesoftribeshallsoondissolve;thatastheworldgrowssmaller,ourcommonhumanityshallrevealitself;andthatAmericamustplayitsroleinusheringinaneweraofpeace.

TotheMuslimworld,weseekanewwayforward,basedonmutualinterestandmutualrespect.Tothoseleadersaroundtheglobewhoseektosowconflict,orblametheirsociety'sillsontheWest,knowthatyourpeoplewilljudgeyouonwhatyoucanbuild,notwhatyoudestroy.（Applause.）

Tothosewhoclingtopowerthroughcorruptionanddeceitandthesilencingofdissent,knowthatyouareonthewrongsideofhistory,butthatwewillextendahandifyouarewillingtounclenchyourfist.（Applause.）

Tothepeopleofpoornations,wepledgetoworkalongsideyoutomakeyourfarmsflourishandletcleanwatersflow;tonourishstarvedbodiesandfeedhungryminds.Andtothosenationslikeoursthatenjoyrelativeplenty,wesaywecannolongeraffordindifferencetothesufferingoutsideourborders,n
