MeganNapoliisaresearchecologistwiththeMohonkPreserveinNewYork.ShethinksSmiley’seffortsproducedararelong-termdatasetofobservations,whichisusefulforstudyingtheimpactsofclimatechange.Forinstance,otherresearchhasshownthatsongbirdsaremigratingnorthearlierandearlierinthespring.
It’simportantforthebirdstoarriveatthepropertimeinthespring,becausetheyneedtotimetheirarrivalwiththeinsectemergence.Sotheyneedtobeheretoestablishtheirnestingsites,laytheireggs.Oncetheeggshatch,theyhavetheirbabybirds,sotheyneedtotimeitwhentheinsectsaremostabundant.
Napolihasbegunanalyzingabout76,000observationsofsongbirdmigrationdatescollectedbySmileyandhisteamtoseeifthey,too,showthatclimatechangehasalteredthetimingofmigrations.Herresultssuggestthattheydo.
