Inthe19thcentury,travelbecamemuchmorepopularandfaster.Whenthefirstrailwayswerebuiltinthe1820s,itwaseasierforpeopletotravelbetweentowns,sotheystartedtogoforholidaysbythesea.Andsomestartedtohaveholidaysinthecountrysideascitiesbecamelarger,noisieranddirtier.
Travelingbyseaalsobecamefasterandsaferwhenthefirststeamshipswerebuilt.Peoplebegantotravelmoretofarawaycountries.
The20thcenturysawcarsbecomemoreandmorepopularamongordinarypeople.Planesweremadelarger,soticketpricesdroppedandmorepeopleusedthem.
Thustourismgrew.In1949,RussianjournalistVladimirRaitzstartedacompanycalledHorizonHolidays.Thecompanyorganiseseverything—planetickets,hotelrooms,evenfood—andtouristspayforitallbeforetheyleavehome.Thepackagetourandmoderntouristindustrywasborn.
ThefirsttravelagencyinChinawassetupasearlyas1949.Buttourismdidnottakeoffuntil1978.In2002,theindustrywasworth500billionyuanandbecameanimportantpartofChina’ssocialdevelopment.
