Thisyear,theWorldWideWebhasturned25yearsold.Whatmanypeopledon’tknowisthatthewebwasatfirstcreatedtoimprovecommunicationbetweenthousandsofscientistsinSwitzerland.

In1989,TimBerners-Leewasa34-year-oldBritishphysicistworkingasasoftware（软件）engineeratCERN,theEuropeanOrganizationforNuclearResearchinSwitzerland.SinceCERNwasahugeorganizationwiththousandsofscientists,communicationbetweenthemwasbecomingincreasinglydifficult.

Berners-Leewantedtodevelopasystemtosolvetheproblem. Hispapersuggestedaninformationsystem,whereapageononecomputercouldhavealinktoanotherpageonanothercomputer（connectedthroughtheInternet）,allowingscientiststoreadlotsofinformationquickly.However,Berners-Lee’sbosssaidthatitsoundedexcitingbutimpossible.

Eventhoughthereweremanydifficultiesandfewsupporters,Berners-LeewentontodeveloptheWorldWideWeb.HecameupwithideassuchasHyper-textTransferProtocol（超文本传输协议）toallowcomputerstotalktoeachother,Hyper-textMarkupLanguage（HTML）tocreatethepages,aservertoservethepages,andabrowser（浏览器）toseethem. 

InDecember1990,theWorldWideWebwasdemonstrated（展示）andin1991,theWWWprojectwasmadepublic,sothatotherprogrammerscoulddeveloptheirownbrowsers.Berners-Leebelievedthatitcouldbeusedformorethanscientificpurposes.HewantedtheInternettobeeasyforanyonetouse—afreeopensoftware.Hiswishessooncametrue.
