theviewofchooselover,thewedding,theconjugalrelationshipandthemarriedlife.Andthenguidepeopletochoosetherightviewoflove.
1.1ThePandect
ThedifferentviewsoflovebetweenChinaandAmericatypicallyreflectthedifferentculturaltraitsofChineseandAmericanpeople.Thatis,theChinesepeoplearealwaysmeaningandconservativewhiletheAmericanpeopleareoutgoingandfancyfree.
ChinameanoftheConfusionschooltheChinesepeople,ofcourse,italsodeterminestheviewoflove.ThismakestheChinesepeoplemeaningandconservative,theywouldliketotheirfeelingsratherthanexpressthem.Onthecontrary,Americaisanewly-emergingnation,itcultureisbasedontheoceancultureoftheAncientGreecetradition.ThelogicalthinkingandanalyticalthinkingofAristotletheirthinkingmode.ComparedwiththeChinesegoldenmeanthought,theAmericanpeoplearemoreromanticandfreedom.Whattheycareaboutisthepersonalityliberation.Ontheviewoflove,theAmericanpeoplearemoreopen.Theywouldliketodoanythingtheywantfortheirlove,nomatterthisinthefollowingsections.
1.2TheViewofChooseLover
1.2.1DifferentstandardsofspouseselectioninChinaandAmerica
ChinaandAmerica.InChina,whentalkingaboutthestandardofspouseselection,wewillalways?
”,“Areyoumatchedformarriage?
”“DoseAmerica,thesequestionsrarelymentioned.In“Friends”,thesixprotagonistsalltalkingabouttheirboyfriendsorgirlfriends,weofteninAmericaisverysimple,peoplewouldchoosetogotogetheronlyiftheyinterestsandloveeachother.ButinChina,thesituationbecomesverycomplicated.Whenthinkingaboutmarriage,thesameinterestsandlovearenotthedecisivefactors.Whatreallymattersareyourparents’attitudeandyourfamilybackground.Basedonpeople.(TextualResearchofLawofNineDynasty).SowecouldseethatbematchedformarriageisveryimportantinChina.Thenext,let’stake“Friends”and“MyOwnSwordsman”forexamples.
1.2.2Take“Friends”and“MyOwnSwordsman”forexamples
In“MyOwnSwordsman”,wecouldseetheinfluenceofparents’attitudeandfamilybackgroundonthemarriage.Inthefirstset,TongXiangyuwasmarriedtoamancalledMr.Mowhosheevendidn’tknow.Thisistheso-calledarrangedmarriage.Unfortunately,theoldtradition,widowcan’tremarrysosheeventhe25setand67set,TongXiangyu’sfatherandGuoFurong’sfathercametoTongfuTaverntointervenetheirdaughter’smarriage.Thesixprotagonistsofcoursetriedtheirbesttoletthetwofathersatisfiedbecausetheyarethecrucialfactoroftheirdaughter’smarriage.Justbecauseofthis,wecouldmakeaconclusionthatloveeachotherisabsolutelyakeyfactor,butiftheparentssayno,thelovewillbecomeworthlessnomatter“Friends”,wecouldalsoseethestandardofspouseselectioninAmericaviasomespecificexamples.ForthosewhoontheMay-DecemberrelationshipbetweenMonicaandRichard.Althoughtheiragesarenotmatch,theystillchosetomarrybecausetheyloveeachother.Itisjustsosimple.Whilethelifeaftermarriagewasnotverytheissuewhethertheyshouldstilllivetogetherreluctantly.Thisistheirstandardofspouseselection.
1.3TheWedding
1.3.1Theweddingceremony
WhentalkingabouttheChinesewedding,peoplewillalwaysbeimpressedbyitsgrandspectacle.In“MyOwnSwordsman”,thereisonlyonewedding,butthisonlyoneweddingconcludedallthefactorsofatypicalChineseweddingceremony.Theredandgrandscene,thenumerousguests,thegrandbanquet,theloudfirecrackers,everythingneededisready.Theatmosphereoftheceremonyislivelyandjazzy.ComparedwiththelivelyChineseweddingceremony,theAmericanweddingceremonyseemstobemorepeacefulandsolemn.Nottoomanypeoplegatheredinthechurchtoblessthenewcouples.Theceremonyisnotgrand,butwarmandalittlepoetic.“Friends”described5weddingceremonies,allofthemarewarmandsolemn,makingtheaudiencefeelcomfortable.EspeciallyRossandRachel’swedding.Althoughtherewasnoaudience,themoodisverywarm.Wecoulddeeplyfeelthepurityoflove.
Franklyspeaking,thisdifferencesitselfisveryinteresting.TheconservativeChinesepeoplewouldliketothecontrary,thejazzyAmericanschoosetotheoddphenomenon,suchasthereligiousbelief,thegeographicdifferences.ButIthinkthisphenomenonitselfChineseandAmericanwedding,thatistheweddingfee.First,theguestsattendingtheweddingceremonyinChinamustpreparearedpacket(moneyinside,atleast100yuan)forthenewcouples.WhileinAmerica,theguestsusuallybringacommongiftfortheweddingceremony.Second,inChina,thecoupleusuallypayfortheweddingfeetogether.Becauseoftheredpackets,therealfeetheyneedtopayisnotaverylargenumber.WhileinAmerica,theweddingfeeistotallypaidbythewife.ThisprobablywillneverinChina,butinAmerica,thisisacommonsense.
1.4TheConjugalRelationship
1.4.1Thepropertyrelations
InChina,thepropertyisinchargeofoneperson,usuallytheoneisthewife.In“MyOwnSwordsman”,TongXiangyuandGuFurongtookchargeofthemoney.Thisreflectstwophenomenon.Thefirst,althoughthepropertyisinchargebyoneperson,thepropertybelongstobothofthem.Itseemstobeunequal,butitperfectlyexplainstheirfirmconjugalrelationship.Thepropertytiesthetwocouplestogether.Thesecond,thefemalesaremorefrugalandcarefulthanthosecarelessmen.Theyaregoodattakingchargeofthemoney.
InAmerica,peoplealwaystakechargeoftheirmoney.What’smore,theyalwaysbuytheirownthingswiththeirownmoney.Afragmentin“Friends”wonderfullyexplainsthisphenomenon.Oneday,Chandlerboughtawentbackintothecar.Monicawasindidn’taskifshewantsometoeat.Icouldn’tunderstandChina,thereislittletransparencybetweenthetwocouples.ExceptfortheworkAmerica,thecouplesAmerica,thewifewillneverchecktheirChina.
Infact,theconjugalrelationshipcanperfectlyreflectsacountry’sculturalconnotation.Generallyspeaking,theChinesecouplesarelikeatrueloveknotweavedbyawholeredgimp.Thetrueloveknotisnotonlyfirmandbeautifulbutalsointegrity.Ontheothercouplesareliketwoencounteredcreeks.Thetwocreeksarenotonlycasualbutalsoconfluent.
1.5TheMarriedLife
1.5.1Theaffectionaftermarriage
InChina,thereisanoldsaying“marriageisthetomboflove”.ButinAmerica,thissayingisnotfit.“ThelifestyleofChinesepeopleisunderthedemandsofthepublicandotherpeople,loveandsexisakindoflifestylesoitmustbelimited.ForanAmerican,love,whileforanChinesepeople,People).
1.5.2Attitudestowardsdivorce
TheChinesepeoplelivebytheirresponsibilitiesandfamilyrelationsaftermarriage,whiletheAmericanlivebytheirfeelingswhenever.Intheirconcept,themarriagewithoutloveisanevilmarriage.Sotheywouldliketodivorcewhentheynolongerloveeachother.ButinChina,we’tleavebesideslove,suchasthechildren,thepublicopinionandsoon.
Let’stake“Friends”and“MyOwnSwordsman”forexamples.In“Friends”,Rosstheirmind,theywoulddivorceiftheynolongerfeelpeople’sattitudetowardsdivorce.
Thereisanoldsayinggoes“Thewifewhosharedthecouplequarreledwitheachother,theywillalwaysthinkabouttheirpast.TheChinesepeopleareaffectionate,theywouldliketoliveinthesorrowratherthankickdowntheladder.In“MyOwnSwordsman”,TongXiangyuwouldliketobearratherthancomplainaboutChina,peoplerarelytalkaboutthistopic.Actually,sexuallifeisaveryimportantpartintheconjugalrelationship.InAmerica,peopleseesexasdailyroutines.Wecouldseefrom“Friends”thattheAmericanpeopleneverregardsexasataboo.InChina,manywome
