OnedayIwenttothefrontgarden.Therewasaninchofsnowontheground.Ifoundsomebody'stracksthere.Theyweremydaddy's,Ithought.WhenIlitmycandleandwentuptomyroomthatnight,theresatDaddy.Ishutthedoor.Helookedveryold.Hishairwaslongandhisclotheswerejustrags.Therewasnocolorinhisface.Helookedlikeasickman.

Hesaid,"Youseemtobeveryhappyandrich.Theysayyouhavesixthousanddollars.Icameheretogetsomemoneyfromyou.Givemethatmoneytomorrow.IhavenomoneyandI'mverypoor."

Ididn'tgotoschoolforamonth.AtfirstIwantedtogobacktoschoolbecauseIwasbeginningtoenjoystudying.ButbyandbyIgotlazy.ThenIthoughtitcomfortabletolieorfisheverydayinsteadofstudying.

Daddystartedtogototownorsomewhereelsemoreoftenthanbefore.Onedayhelockedmeinanddidnotreturnforthreedays.Iwasverylonesome.Ithoughthehaddrowned.ItwasthenthatImadeupmymindtoleavethecabin.Itriedtogetoutofthecabinmanytimes,butIcouldn'tfindawayout.Therewasn'tawindowbigenoughformetogetthrough.Daddyneverleftaknifeorahammerbehindwhenhewentaway.

WhenDaddywashome,wemadeitaruletogototheriverbanktoseeifthereweresomefishonthelinesforbreakfast.Onemorninghewokemeupandwewentuptothebank.Isawsomepiecesofwoodandlogsfloatingdown.Iknewtheriverhadrisen.TheJunerisealwaysbroughtmealotofmoney,becauseassoonastherisebegan,somelogs─sometimesadozenlogs─floateddowntogether.AllIhadtodowastogetthemandsellthemtothesawmill.

  Allatonce,therecameacanoe,aboutthirteenorfourteenfeetlong.Ijumpedintothewaterandcaughtholdofthecanoe.Iwasallwet,butitwasallright.Therewasnobodyinit.Iclimbedinandpaddleditashore.Ithought,"Daddywouldsellit─itisworthtendollars."Idecidedtohideitinthelittlecreekwhichwascoveredwiththebranchesofwillowtrees.WhenDaddycame,Isaid,"Ifellintothewaterandthat'swhyI'mallwet."

Wecaughtfivecatfishandwenthome.AfterbreakfastIthoughtofrunningoffsomewhereinthecanoe.Abouttwelveo'clockwewentuptothebankagain.Theriverwasrunningprettyfastandlotsofwooddrifted.WewentoutinDaddy'ssmallboatandgotsomeofthelogsandtookthemashore.

  ThenextdayDaddylockedmeinandstartedforthesawmillintowntosellthelogs.Hissmallboatwentveryslowasittowedtheraft,soIthoughthewouldn'tcomebackthatnight.Assoonasheleft,Itookmysawandbegantotrytomakeaholeinthewall.AfteranhourIcouldmakeaholewhichwasbigenoughformetogetthrough.NowIwasbusypreparingmyescape.

Itookasackofcornmealandcarriedittothecanoe.ThenItooksomebacon,coffeeandsugar,someammunition,twoblanketsandotherusefulthings.Itooktheaxewithme,too.

  Icrawledoutoftheholeanddraggedoutmythings.Iworkedhardtorestorethewallandthefloortoitsformercondition.ThenItookthegunandwentintothewoods.Ishotawildpigandtookitbacktothecabin.Ismashedthedooropenwiththeaxe,thenIcutthepig'sthroat.Ilaiditdownonthefloornearthetabletoletitbleed.NextItookanoldsackandputalotofbigrocksinit.Idraggedittothedoorandthroughthewoodsdowntotheriver.AtlastIpulledoutsomeofmyhair,putsomeofthepig'sbloodontheaxe,andstuckitinthebackyard.Ithrewthepigintotheriversothatnobodywouldseeit.Ididallthesethings,becauseIwantedtomakeDaddythinkIwaskilledbysomeoneandwastakenawaysomewhere.

Itwasgettingdarkeranddarker.Iwaitedinthecanoeforthemoontorise.Isaidtomyself,"Theywillthinkthatrobberskilledmeandwillsearchtheriverformydeadbody.Butsoonthey'llgettiredofit.ThenI'llbefree.ThenIcangoanywhereandlivebymyself."

  IwasgoingtogotoJackson'sIslandwhenitwasdark.IwassotiredthatIfellasleep.WhenIwokeup,Ididn'tknowwhereIwasforaminuteortwo.Afterawhile,IrememberedthatIwasstillinthecanoe.

Themoonwasbright,soIcouldcountthedriftinglogsahundredyardsawayfromshore.
