1GroupWork

Groupworkisanimportantactivitystudentsarerequiredtodothroughoutthesemester.Intheactivitystudentscanlistentoeachotherandshareeachother’sideasandexperiences.Interpersonalrelationshipswilldevelopduringtheprocessofworkingtogether.What’smore,workinginsmallgroups,say,between3and5,studentswillhavegreateropportunitiestoimprovetheirlisteningandspeakingskillsthantheycanwhenthewholeclassworkstogether.

Inaddition,groupworkcanhelppracticeanddevelopfourkeyskills:

problem-solving,decision-making,criticalthinkingandcreativethinking.

Toinvolvestudentsinthisactivityeachgroupshouldhaveagroupleadertohelptheteacherachievethisgoal.Studentsmaychangetheirgroupsevery5or6weekssoastobeabletoknowmoreoftheirclassmates.Theymayalsotaketurnsbeinggroupleaders.

2TheProceduresofGroupDiscussion

Inanidealsmallgroupdiscussion,groupmembersareencouragedtocontributetheirpersonalopinionsorknowledgeofaparticularissue,supportthoseopinions,discussdifferencesofopinionwithinthegroup,andeventually,reporttothewholeclass.Asmallgroupdiscussioncanbegenerallydividedintothefollowingprocedures:

iFormingGroups

Inthefirstclassofsmallgroupdiscussion,thewholeclassisdividedintoseveralgroups.Howmanygroupsareproduced?

Arethegroupsstudent-selectedorteacher-selected?

Aretheygender-mixedorproficiency-mixed?

Allthesewillbedecidedaccordingtothepracticalsituationoftheclass,forexample,howmanystudentsthereareintheclass,thepurposeoftheactivityandsoon.

iiInstructions

Theinstructionsgivenatthebeginningarecrucial:

Ifthestudentsdonotunderstandexactlywhattheyaretodo,theywillbeconfusedandalotoftimewilllikelybewasted.

iiiProcesses

Theteacher’sjobduringtheactivityistogofromgrouptogroup,monitor,andeithercontributeorkeepoutoftheway—whicheverislikelytobemorehelpful.Iftheteacherdoesdecidetointervene,theircontributionmaytaketheformof:

•providingapprovalandsupport,

•helpingstudentswhoarehavingdifficulty,and

•keepingthestudentsusingthetargetlanguage.

Iftheteacherhassetatimelimit,thenthiswillhelpterminatetheactivityifthediscussionisabouttofinish.

Iftheteacherimplicitlyleadsstudentstosomediscussionofthe“findings”ofthegroups,then

theymayleaveenoughtimeforthistotakeplace.Becausethisprogressgiveseachgroupachancetoperceivedifferencesandsimilaritiesintheirwork,anditprovidesmotivationforfurthergroupwork.Asaresult,thisphasebringstheclassbacktogetherasawholecommunityoflearnersandevenaveryshortperiodofwhole-classdiscussionremindsstudentsthateveryoneintheroomisamemberofateamoflearners.

viFeedback

Afeedbacksessionusuallytakesplaceattheendofthesmallgroupdiscussion.Feedbackonthetaskmaytakemanyforms:

presentingapossiblesolution,evaluatingsuggestions,orjustexpressingappreciationoftheeffortthathasbeeninvested.

Althoughallparticipantsinadiscussionhavetheresponsibilitytolistenandremembersomeoftheinformationandcontributions,teachershaveaspecialresponsibilitytoretainvirtuallyeverythingsaid.Theymustdeveloptheabilitytorecallatappropriatetimeswhathasbeensaidearlierinordertoillustratepointsmadelater.

3Teacher’sPrimaryRolesinGroupDiscussion

Insmallgroupdiscussion,teachersneedtocommunicateopenlyandempathicallywiththestudents.Theteacheropensspacesforstudentstoshareandclarifiesunfamiliarwaysofthinking.

Teachersasparticipantsimprovetheatmosphereintheclassandofferstudentsachancetolearnfromthem.
