Accustomedthoughwearetospeakingofthefilmsmadebefore1927as“silent”,thefilmhasneverbeen,inthefullsenseoftheword,silent.Fromtheverybeginning,musicwasregardedasanindispensable(不可缺少的;绝对必要的)acpaniment(伴奏;伴随物);whentheLumierefilmswereshownatthefirstpublicfilmexhibitionintheUnitedStatesinFebruary1896,theywereacpaniedbypianoimprovisationsonpopulartunes.Atfirst,themusicplayedborenospecialrelationshiptothefilms;anacpanimentofanykindwassufficient.Withinaveryshorttime,however,theincongruity(不协调;不一致;不适合)ofplayinglivelymusictoasolemnfilmbecameapparent,andfilmpianistsbegantotakesomecareinmatchingtheirpiecestothemoodofthefilm.
Asmovietheatersgrewinnumberandimportance,aviolinist,andperhapsacellist,wouldbeaddedtothepianistincertaincases,andinthelargermovietheaterssmallorchestraswereformed.Foranumberofyears,theselectionofmusicforeachfilmprogramrestedentirelyinthehandsoftheconductororleaderoftheorchestra,andveryoftentheprincipalqualification(资格,授权;条件,限制)forholdingsuchapositionwasnotskillortastesomuchastheownershipofalargepersonallibraryofmusicalpieces.
Sincetheconductorseldomsawthefilmsuntilthenightbeforetheyweretobeshown(ifindeed,the
conductorwasluckyenoughtoseethemthen),themusicalarrangementwasnormallyimprovisedinthegreatesthurry.
Tohelpmeetthisdifficulty,filmdistributingpaniesstartedthepracticeofpublishingsuggestionsformusicalacpaniments.In1909,forexample,theEdisonpanybeganissuingwiththeirfilmssuchindications(指示;象征;表明)ofmoodas“pleasant”,“sad”,“lively”.Thesuggestionsbecamemoreexplicit,andsoemergedthemusicalcuesheetcontainingindicationsofmood,thetitlesofsuitablepiecesofmusic,andprecisedirectionstoshowwhereonepieceledintothenext.
Certainfilmshadmusicespeciallyposedforthem.ThemostfamousoftheseearlyspecialscoreswasthatposedandarrangedforD.WGriffith'sfilmBirthofaNation,whichwasreleasedin1915.
