In1856,MountEverestwasnamedafterSirGeorgeEverest(1790—1866),whowasthesuperintendent(负责人)oftheTrigonometricalSurveyofIndia.Everesthimselfwasinitiallydispleasedbythenaming,sincehefearedthatlocalinhabitantsmightnotbeabletopronounceit.
