1.Unitdescription
Financialmanagementispartofthedecision-making,planningandcontrolsubsystemsofanenterprise.Itincorporatesthetreasuryfunction,whichincludesthemanagementofworkingcapitalandtheimplicationsarisingfromexchangeratemechanismsduetointernationalcompetition,evaluation,selection,managementandcontrolofnewcapitalinvestmentopportunities,raisingandmanagementofthelong-termfinancingofanentity.
Themanagementofriskinthedifferentaspectsofthefinancialactivitiesundertakenisalsoaddressed.Studyingthiscourseshouldprovideyouwithanoverviewoftheproblemsfacingafinancialmanagerinthecommercialworld.Itwillintroduceyoutotheconceptsandtheoriesofcorporatefinancethatunderliethetechniquesthatareofferedasaidsfortheunderstanding,evaluationandresolutionoffinancialmanagers’problems.ThissubjectguideiswrittentosupplementtheEssentialandFurtherreadinglistedforthiscourse,nottoreplacethem.ItmakesnoassumptionsaboutpriorknowledgeotherthanthatyouhavecompletedPrinciplesofaccounting.
Theaimofthecourseistoprovideanunderstandingandawarenessofboththeunderlyingconceptsandpracticalapplicationofthebasicsoffinancialmanagement.Thesubjectguideandthereadingsshouldalsohelptobuildinyourmindtheabilitytomakecriticaljudgmentsofthestrengthsandweaknessesofthetheories,justasitshouldbehelpingtobuildacriticalappreciationoftheusesandlimitationsofthesametheoriesandtheirpossibleapplications.

AttendancePolicy
Attendanceinclassisaveryimportantpartofyourlearningexperience.Assuch,failuretoattendclasswillreduceyourgrade,andmaybegroundsforfailureinthecourse.Ifyouarelatetoclass,yourattendancescoremayalsobeaffected.Intheeventofunavoidableabsences,suchasseriousillness,ordeathsinthefamily,studentsmayberequestedtoprovidedocumentaryevidenceofthereasonfortheirabsencetotheiracademiccoordinator.Youshouldnotgivethesetoyourinstructor.Studentsaresolelyresponsibleforthemakeupofanymissedclasses,andforobtaininganyclassmaterialsorassignmentsthattheymaymiss.Youareexpectedtocometoclasspreparedtoactivelyparticipateinclassdiscussions.
ParticipationPolicy
Studentsshouldparticipateintheirchosenclassesactivelyandeffectively.TheParticipationGradeisrelatedtotheAttendanceGrade.Students’finalattendancegradeisthemaximumoftheirparticipationgrade.
Participationgradewillbebasedonavarietyoffactorsincluding,butnotlimitedtotakingpartinclassdiscussionsandactivities,completingassignments,beingabletoanswerquestionscorrectly,obeyingclassrules,andbeingpreparedforclass,frequentvisitingyourinstructorsandchattinginEnglishduringtheirofficehoursishighlyrecommended.
PolicyonAssignmentsandQuizzes
Studentsshouldfinishtheirassignmentscompletelyandpunctually.Assignmentshouldbesubmittedonthedateappointedbytheinstructor.Ifastudentcannothandintheassignmentontime,thereasonableexcusewillbeneeded.Lateassignmentswillreceiveamaximumgradeof80.Anassignmentthatislatefor3dayswillbecorrectedbutreceive0.
YouarerecommendedprintallyourassignmentintheuniformformatwiththeheadingofStudent’sPledgeofnocheating.Writtenassignmentorprintedoneswithouttheuniformheadingofpledgewillreceiveamaximumgradeof80.
Itismandatorytohaveweekendassignmenteveryweek.Anyweekendassignmentshouldbesubmittedonfirstclassofnextweek.Itismandatorytohaveholidayassignmentonthepublicholidays.Anyholidayassignmentshouldbesubmittedonthefirstdayonreturningtoschool.Studentsarerequiredtodoamultitudeofpresentationsduringthecourse.
PlagiarismandCopying
Plagiarismisusingsomeoneelse’sworkorideasasyourownwithoutgivingthempropercreditorcopyingsomeoneelse’sworkandpresentingitasyourown.Therehasaverystrictplagiarismpolicyandwillnottolerateacademiccheatinginanyform.Penaltiescanbeassevereasexpulsionfromtheuniversity.Attheveryleast,noonewillreceiveanycreditforassignmentsthatappeartobecopiedfromanotherstudent.Toavoidplagiarism,doyourownwork,orcitetheworkofothersappropriately.Youcanrefertothecoursecatalogueformoreinformationaboutplagiarismpolicy.
Ifyoucheatonthehomework,Icanguaranteeyouthatyouwillfailtheclass.EveryexamIgivehasseveralproblemsthatrequireyoutosubmitjournalentries,createfinancialstatementsinproperform,ortocreateschedulesshowingcertaindetailsthatyouhavetocalculate.Ifyoudonotpracticedoingthesethingsbydoingthehomeworkyourselfandcorrectingyourownworkinclass,youwillloseasignificantnumberofpointsontheexams.
