FIELDOFTHEINVENTION

Thisinventionrelatestoprocessesforelectropolishingaluminumoraluminumalloymaterials.

BACKGROUNDOFTHEINVENTION

Inmanyaluminumpolishingprocesses,thealuminummaterialispolishedusingachemicalprocessthatdoesnotrequireelectricitytoeffectuatepolishing.However,suchpolishingprocessestypicallyusehightemperaturesandmayrequiretheuseofascrubbertoremovenitrousoxidefumesproducedbythenitricacidandphosphoricacidcomponentsthatcanbeusedinsuchchemicalprocess.Suchprocessescanalsobeundesirableduetoenvironmentalconcerns.

Whileprocessesusingelectricity,i.e.,electropolishingprocesses,havebeenusedtopolishstainlesssteelmetalsurfaces,processesforelectropolishingaluminum,inparticular,aluminumalloymetalsurfaces,havemetwithlimitedsuccessduetothegeneralrequirementforhazardousorfumeproducingchemicals,theneedforlargeamountsofelectricitytobeappliedtoeffectthepolishingoradverseeffectsonthemetalsurfacecausedby,forexample,etchingofthesurface.

Itwouldbedesirabletohaveprocessesforelectropolishingaluminum,inparticular,aluminumalloymaterials,thatdonotresultinnoxiousand/ortoxicfumes,useminimalelectricityanddonotetchthesurfaceofthemetalsurface.

SUMMARYOFTHEINVENTION
