Backgroundknowledge:
LauraIngallsWilderwasborninPepin,Wisconsin,inFebruary1867.ShewasthesecondoffourdaughtersborntoCaroline(Quiner)andCharlesPhilipIngalls.Wilder'searlylifewasspentconstantlymovingfromplacetoplace.Herfathercalledhimselfapioneermananddreamedofgoingwesttoexploreandsettleonunknownterritory.Theytraveledthroughthickwoods,overbarrenprairies,throughtheswollenMississippi,andovericywatersallintheircoveredwagon.TheymovedfromMissouri,toKansas,toWisconsin,toMinnesota,toIowaandfinallysettledinDeSmet,SouthDakota,whereherfatherclaimedahomestead.LauraandherthreesistersgrewupinDeSmet.Wilder,however,nevercouldquiteseethisplaceashome.ThemanymovesinherearlychildhoodmadeLauracometotheconclusionthattheonlywaytoknowthatshewastrulyhomewastohaveherfamilyaroundher.Followinginherfather'sdreams,Wildercalledherselfapioneergirlandmadeherhomewhereherfamilytookher.

Singer,IsaacBashevis,1904-91,Americannovelistandshort-storywriterintheYiddishlanguage,youngerbrotherofI.J.Singer,b.Poland.HeemigratedtotheUnitedStatesin1935andworkedinNewYorkCityasajournalistontheJewishDailyForward.In1943hebecameanAmericancitizen.Singer'swork,oftenfranklysexual,drawsheavilyonJewishfolklore,religion,andmysticism.ThoughhewroteinYiddish,hewasfluentinEnglishand
closelysupervisedtheEnglish
translationsofhisworks.In1978hewontheNobelPrizeinLiterature,thefirstYiddish-languageauthortobesohonored.ManyofhislaterworkstreatthelonelinessofoldageandthesenseofalienationproducedinJewsbythedissolutionofvaluesthroughassimilationwiththeGentileworld.HisnovelsincludeTheFamilyMoskat(tr.1950),SataninGoray(tr.1955),TheManor(tr.1967),Enemies(tr.1972),Shasha(tr.1978),ThePenitent(tr.1983),Scum(tr.1991),andtheposthumouslypublishedShadowsontheHudson(tr.1997).Singerisalsohighlyregardedforhisimaginative,perceptive,andwittyshortstories.CollectionsincludeGimpeltheFool(tr.1961),TheSpinozaofMarketStreet(tr.1961),OldLove(tr.1979),andTheDeathofMethuselah(tr.1985).Healsowrotebooksforchildrenandseveralplays,notablyTheMirror(tr.1973).

Thechamberopera"Fool'sParadise"isinspiredbydistinguishedYiddishwriterandNobelPrizelaureateIsaacBashevisSinger'sstoryofthesamename.Howisitthatsuchashortchildren'sstoryshouldbeworthyofanentireopera?
Whileitisasimpletale,itencompassesthefullscopeoflife'sexperiences.Childhood,adolescence,love,death,burial,resurrectionandweddingallservetomakethisadramaticstorywhichisbiggerthanlife.
Theoperaisintendedforchildren.Inapproachingsuchaprojectonemustquestionwhethercomposingespeciallyforchildrenisanydifferentfromcomposingforadults.Childrendonotaskformuch;theyhaveagreatdealofintuitionandawealthofimagination.Infact,inmanywaysalltheyaskoftheadultauthororcomposeristospeaktotheminclearsimplelanguageandallowforsomemysteryandmagic.Ignitetheirimaginationsandtheycandotherestontheirown!
Therearesevencharactersintheopera.Eachoneofthemisattachedtoaninstrumentoraspecificgroupofinstruments.Thediversityofinstrumentationanduniqueorchestrationmadetheuseofsymphonicorchestraunnecessary.Thereis,infact,nodoublingofinstrumentsexceptfortheclarinets.Theimportanceofeachpartisdramaticallyincreasedasthesoloistsdisplaythefullpaletteoftheirinstruments'abilities.Thisuseofonlyoneinstrumentofakindresultsinalargechamberensemblewithanewqualityofsoundandacousticbalance.
Finally,thereisthebeautifulmessageof"Fool'sParadise".Initsabsurdway,asimplebutimportantmorallessonisconveyed:
lifeisbetterthandeathandwonderfulParadiseisnowhereelsebuthere--onearth.Thisisalessonrelevanttoeveryone,childrenandgrown-upsalike.
