WhenNickA.Corcodilosstartedoutintheheadhuntingbusiness20yearsago,hehadakeeneyefortrackingtalent.FromhisbaseinSiliconValleyhewouldsendall-starperformerstoblue-chipcompanieslikeXerox,IBMandGeneralElectronic.Butwhilehewouldsucceedinhispartofthehunt,thejob-seekershelocatedwouldoftenfailintheirs.Theywerestrikingoutbefore,duringoraftertheinterview.
Soinsteadofsimplescoutingfortalent,Corcodilosbeganadvertisingjobcandidatesaswell.Hehelpedimprovetheirsuccessratiobyteachingthemtopursuefewercompanies,maketherightcontactsanddeliverwhatcompaniesarelookingforinaninterview.Inhismyth-bustingbook,AsktheHeadhunter(Plume,1997),Corcodiloshasreinventedtherulesofthejobsearch,frompreparationtointerviewtechniques.Herearehissixnewprinciplesforsuccessfuljobhunting.
Yourresumeismeaningless.
Headhuntersknowaresumerarelygetsyouinsideacompany.Allitdoesisoutlineyourpast—largelyirrelevantsinceitdoesn’tdemonstratethatyoucandotheworkthehiringmanagerneedsdone.“Aresumeleavesituptotheemployerstofigureouthowyoucanhelptheirorganization,”Corcodilossays.“That’snowaytosellyourself.”Recallingthemarketingadage(古训)thatafreeproductsamplegivescustomersareasontowantmore,hesuggestsyoudothesame:
giveemployersanexampleofwhatyoucandoforthem.“Createanewareainyourresume.Callit‘valueoffered’.Intwosentences,statethevalueyouwouldbringtothatparticularemployer.”Forexample,“Iwillreduceyouroperationcostsbystreamingyourshippingdepartment.”Bespecific,creatingaseparateresumeforeachcompanyyouapproach.

Oneofthebestwaystolearnaboutacompanyistotalktopeoplewhoworkthere.KentonGreenofAnnArbor,Mich.,usedthistechniquewhilecompletingadoctoralprograminelectricalengineeringandopticsintheUniversityofRochester:
“IwouldfindanarticlepublishedbysomeoneinmyfieldwhoworkedatacompanyIwasinterestedin.ThenI’dcallthatpersonandasktotalk,mentionmyemployabilityanddiscussthecompany’sneeds.Oneofthetwothingshappened:
I’deithergetanintervieworlearnweweren’tagoodmatchafterall.”Asyouinvestigateaprospectiveemployer,youwilloftenfindyouandthecompanyarenotmadeforeachother.“Andthat’sgood,”Corcodilossays,“becausewhenyoudofindtherightfit,youwillwalkintoaninterviewwithconfidence,havingdecidedthisiswhereyouwanttowork.”
Remember,theemployerwantstohireyou.
“Acompanyholdsinterviewssoitcanfindthebestpersonforthejob,”Corcodilossays.“Themanagerwillbeextremelyhappyifthatpersonturnsouttobeyou—becausethenheorshecanstopinterviewingandgetbacktowork.”
Sogiveyourselfanattitudeadjustment.“Ifyouconvinceyourselfthemanagerwantstohireyou,you’llhaveapositiveattitudetowardstheinterview,andyourattitudemightinfluencethemanagertofeelgoodaboutyou.”
Pretendtheinterviewisyourfirstdayatwork.
Mostpeopletreataninterviewasifitwereaninterrogation(审问).Theemployerasksquestions,andthecandidategivesanswers.
Headhuntersgooutoftheirwaytoavoidthatoutline.“Yourattitudeshouldbethatofanemployeewho’stheretotalkaboutanewproject,ratherthanthemoreobsequiousattitudeofacandidatewho’shopingtogetanoffer,”Corcodilossays.
ConsiderhowCorcodiloscoachedGerryZagorskiofEdison,N.J.,whowaspursuinganopeningatAT&T.Thevice-presidenthandlingtheinterviewtoldZagorskithemeetingcouldlastnomorethan20minutes.ZagorskiwalkedovertheVP’smarkerboardandoutlinedthecompany’schallengesandthestepshewouldtaketoincreaseitsprofits.Fifteenminuteslater,asZagorskiwrotedownhisestimateofwhathewouldaddtothebottomline,helookedupathisinterviewer.
“Theguy’sjawwasonthefloor,”Corcodilossays.“HetoldZagorskithatfinishingtheinterviewwouldn’tbenecessary.Instead,theVPbroughtintherestofhisteam,andthemeetinglastedfortwohours.”
NotonlydidZagorskidemonstratethatheunderstoodandcoulddothejob,butalsoheshowedhowthecompanywouldprofitfromhiringhimwhenheturnedtheinterviewintoaworkingmeeting.
Gotanoffer?
Interviewthecompany.
Whenanemployermakesanoffer,hedoesmorethandeliveratitleandacompensationpackage—healsocedes(放弃)partofhiscontroloverthehiringprocess.“Attheoutsetoftheinterview,theemployercontrolstheofferandthepowerthatcomeswithit,”Corcodilossays.“Butuponmakinganoffer,hetransfersthatpowertothecandidate.Thisisapowerfewpeopleinthatsituationrealizetheyhave.It’sthetimeforyoutoexplorechangingtheoffertosuityourgoalsandfullyinterviewthecompany.”
Asktomeetthemembersoftheteamyou’vebeeninvitedtojoinandtoseetheresourcesthatwouldbeatyourdisposal.Askformoremoney—butonlyifyouthinkyoutrulydeserveit.Anddon’tworryabouthowtheemployermightreact.“Aslongasyoupresentyourrequestsprofessionallyandnotasdemands,”Corcodilossays,“agoodcompanywillconsiderthethingsthatareimportanttoyou.”
Onceyougetthatoffer,“Youhavethepower,”saysCorcodilos,“todecidewhether,andonwhatterms,youwanttohirethatcompany.”
