WhatCausesDiabetes?

Diabetes,oftenreferredtobydoctorsasdiabetesmellitus,describesagroupofmetabolicdiseasesinwhichthepersonhashighbloodglucose(bloodsugar),eitherbecauseinsulinproductionisinadequate,orbecausethebody'scellsdonotrespondproperlytoinsulin,orboth.Patientswithhighbloodsugarwilltypicallyexperiencepolyuria(frequenturination),theywillbecomeincreasinglythirsty(polydipsia)andhungry(polyphagia).

Therearethreetypesofdiabetes:

A.Type1Diabetes

Thebodydoesnotproduceinsulin.Somepeoplemayrefertothistypeas

Type1diabetesisnowherenearascommonastype2diabetes.Approximately10%ofalldiabetescasesaretype1.Patientswithtype1diabeteswillneedtotakeinsulininjectionsfortherestoftheirlife.Theymustalsoensureproperblood-glucoselevelsbycarryingoutregularbloodtestsandfollowingaspecialdiet.

B.Type2Diabetes

Thebodydoesnotproduceenoughinsulinforproperfunction,orthecellsinthebodydonotreacttoinsulin(insulinresistance).Approximately90%ofallcasesofdiabetesworldwideareofthistype.

Somepeoplemaybeabletocontroltheirtype2diabetessymptomsbylosingweight,followingahealthydiet,doingplentyofexercise,andmonitoringtheirbloodglucoselevels.However,type2diabetesistypicallyaprogressivedisease-itgraduallygetsworse-andthepatientwillprobablyenduphavetotakeinsulin,usuallyintabletform.

Overweightandobesepeoplehaveamuchhigherriskofdevelopingtype2diabetescomparedtothosewithahealthybodyweight.Peoplewithalotofvisceralfat,alsoknownascentralobesity,bellyfat,orabdominalobesity,areespeciallyatrisk.Beingoverweight/obesecausesthebodytoreleasechemicalsthatcandestabilizethebody'scardiovascularandmetabolicsystems.

Beingoverweight,physicallyinactiveandeatingthewrongfoodsallcontributetoourriskofdevelopingtype2diabetes.Drinkingjustonecanof(non-diet)sodaperdaycanraiseourriskofdevelopingtype2diabetesby22%,researchersfromImperialCollegeLondonreportedinthejournalDiabetologia.Thescientistsbelievethattheimpactofsugarysoftdrinksondiabetesriskmaybeadirectone,ratherthansimplyaninfluenceonbodyweight.

Theriskofdevelopingtype2diabetesisalsogreateraswegetolder.Expertsarenotcompletelysurewhy,butsaythatasweagewetendtoputonweightandbecomelessphysicallyactive.Thosewithacloserelativewhohad/hadtype2diabetes,andpeopleofMiddleEastern,African,orSouthAsiandescentalsohaveahigherriskofdevelopingthedisease.

Menwhosetestosteronelevelsarelowhavebeenfoundtohaveahigherriskofdevelopingtype2diabetes.ResearchersfromtheUniversityofEdinburgh,Scotland,saythatlowtestosteronelevelsarelinkedtoinsulinresistance.

C.GestationalDiabetes

Thistypeaffectsfemalesduringpregnancy.Somewomenhaveveryhighlevelsofglucoseintheirblood,andtheirbodiesareunabletoproduceenoughinsulintotransportalloftheglucoseintotheircells,resultinginprogressivelyrisinglevelsofglucose.
