AbrahamLincolnwasaUSpoliticianintheRepublicanPartywhowasthePresidentoftheUSfrom1861to1865.HewonpoliticalsupportintheNorthernUSstatesbecauseofhisspeechesagainstslavery,butthismadehimunpopularintheSouthernstates,whereslavesdidmostofthefarmwork.TheAmericanCivilWarstartedsoonafterhebecamePresident,whentheSouthernstatesdecidedtoleavetheUS.In1863,heannouncedtheEmancipationProclamation,bywhichallslavesintheUSbecamefreepeople.HealsogaveafamousspeechknownastheGettysburgAddressin1863.Afewdaysafterthewarended,hewasshotandkilledinatheaterbyanactorcalledJohnWilkesBooth.LincolnisconsideredtobeoneofthemostimportantUSpresidents.Duringhislifetime,hewassometimescalled‘HonestAbe’becauseeveryoneadmiredhishonesty.HispictureappearsontheUSfive-dollarbillandontheone-centcoin.
