     SouthKoreaseducationsystemhaslongbeenhighlycompetitive.ButforLeeandtheother700,000high-schoolsophomoresinthecountry,high-schoolstudieshavegottenevenmoreintense.That’sbecauseSouthKoreahasconceivedanewcollege-entrancesystem,whichwillbeimplementedin2008.Thisyears10thgraderswillbethefirstgroupevaluatedbythenewadmissionsstandard,whichplacesmoreemphasisongradesinthethreeyearsofhighschoolandlessonnationwideSAT-styleandotherselectiontests,whichhavetraditionallydeterminedwhichstudentsgototheelitecolleges.

     Thechangewasmademostlytoreducewhatthegovernmentsaysisagrowingeducationgapinthecountry:

wealthystudentsgotothebestcollegesandgetthebestjobs,keepingthechildrenofpoorerfamiliesonthesocialmargins.Theaimistoreducetheimportanceofcostlytutorsandcramschools,partlytohelpstudentsenjoyamorenormalhigh-schoollife.Butthenewsystemhashadtheoppositeeffect.Before,studentsdidntworrytoomuchabouttheirgrade-pointaverages;thebigchallengewasbeatinghestandardizedtestsashigh-schoolseniors.Nowstudentsarecompetingagainstoneanotheroverathree-yearperiod,andeverymidtermandfinaltestiscrucial.Fretfulparentsarerelyingevenmoreheavilyontutorsandcramschoolstohelptheirchildrensucceed.

     ParentsandkidshavesentthousandsofangryonlineletterstotheEducationMinistrycomplainingthatthenewadmissionsstandardissettingstudentsagainsteachother."Onecansucceedonlywhenothersfail,”asoneparentsaid.
