1.Introduction

1.1Experimentobjective

Learnthesignaldetectiontheoryandevaluatemethodwhichisoneofitsbasicprocessesbyrecognizepicture.

1.2Experimentcontent

Signaldetectiontheoryisanimportantbranchofinformationtheory.Itcanmeasurenotonlypeople’sreactionofsignalstimulate,butalsonoisesimulate.Thus,itcandistinguishsensitivityfromcriterionofjudgmentandexpressthemindifferentdata.

1.3Experimentmeaning

AmericanpsychologistsW.P.TannerandJ.A.Swetsusesignaldetectiontheoryintheprocedureofhuman’sperceptionwhichledpsychologicalphysicstoanewperiod.Evaluatemethodisabasicexperimentprocess.Forevaluatemethod,participantsarerequiredtodeterminewhetherthereissignalornot,atthesametime,theyhavetoevaluatetheirchoiceaccordingtoacertainclass,thatishowmuchdegreearetheysureabouttheirdecision.

Comparedwiththeothermethodofsignaldetectiontheory,usingevaluatemethodcanobtainmoreinformationofparticipantatthesametime.Wecangetmorethantwocriteria,andinthatcase,wecandrawROClinesafteroneexperiment.

2.Method

2.1Subject

4collegestudentsofpsychologydepartmentinCentralChinaNormalUniversityattheageof19to21.Allparticipantsarenormalintelligenceandmemory.Twostudentsamongthemarefemale.

2.2Equipmentormaterial

Twosetsofpicturesandonesetincludes60differentpictureswhichisusedassignal;theothersetincludes60differentpictureswhichissimilartothefirstsetisusedasnoise.Psykeyprocedure.Keyboardsandcomputers.

2.3Design

Thisiswith-insubjectdesign.Participantsarerequiredtojudgethepicturedisplayedonscreenhadbeenrememberbeforeandthenevaluatetheconvincedegree.

2.4Procedure

1.Theinstructionofexperimentwillshowonthescreen.

2.Intheprocessofremember,60signalswillbedisplayedrandomlyonebyone,andparticipantsneedtorememberthesepicturesascorrectaspossible.

3.Afterthat,wewillenterintotheprocessofjudgment.Inthispart,bothsignalsandnoisewillbemixedanddisplayedrandomlyonebyone.Participantsareaskedtojudgethatwhetherthepictureissignalornotandhowmuchdegreedotheycertain.

4.1represents0%surewhichmeanstotallysureaboutthattheyhaven’tseenthepicture.2means25%sure;3means50%sure;4means75%sureand5representstheytotallysurethattheyhaveseenthepicture.Aftermakingadecision,theyshouldpressthecorrespondingnumberingkey.

5.Leadparticipantsreadtheinstructionandmakesurethattheyunderstandtherequirementsoftheexperimentandcorrectwaytooperatethecomputers.

6.Computerswillrecordthereactionofparticipants.

Comparethesethreeparticipants’reaction,wecaninformthatallp=.000<.05,whichmeansthreeparticipantsaredifferentfromeachothersignificantly.

3.5ROCCurve

AccordingtotheROCCurveabove,wecanknowthateventhoughthreeROCCurveisseparatetoeachotherwhilethetendencyofROCCurveissimilartoeachother.

Thisisthefirstparticipant’sROCCurve,andwecanseethatthelineisfarfromupper-leftpoint,whichmeanshisorhersensibilityisnotverygood,whilethisphenomenonisuncommon.

Thisisthesecondparticipant’sROCCurve,andwecaninformthathisorhersensibilityisbetterthanthefirstonewhichisontheusuallevel.

 

Thisisthethirdparticipant’sROCCurve,andIfinditquitedifferentfromothers.Iusedthesamewaytodealwithdataanddrawthepicture,whileIgotdifferentresult.Ihavenoideaaboutit.

Itriedanotherwaytodrawthesepicture,andIgotthis.

AccordingtotheROCCurveabove,wecanknowthateventhoughthreeROCCurveisseparatetoeachotherwhilethetendencyofROCCurveissimilartoeachother.

4.Discussion

4.1Discussingeneral.

Accordingtoallpicturesabove,wecaneasilyfindthatlinesaresmoothandgentle.ROCCurve’sslopeisshiftingdown.Withthedecreasingofcriteria,falserateofparticipantsincreasesignificantly.

4.2Othereffect.

Therealresultisdifferentfromtheory.Maybethatduetosomeextraneousvariablesaremakingdifference,suchasthepositionparticipantwereorlastingtimeandwayofstimulatedisplayed,evenenvironmentaroundparticipantsandemotionwouldhaveaneffectonresult.

4.3Differencebetweenparticipants

Wecaneasilyinformthatdifferentparticipanthasdifferentsensibility.Participants’owncriterionsmaybethemainreasonwhythishappen.Highercriterialeadtolowerhitrateandfalserateandinreverse.

4.5comparedwithothermethod

Comparedwiththeothermethodofsignaldetectiontheory,usingevaluatemethodcanobtainmoreinformationofparticipantatthesametime.Wecangetmorethantwocriteria,andinthatcase,wecandrawROClinesafteroneexperiment.

5.Conclusion

Signaldetectiontheory–evaluatemethodisausefulwaytomeasuresensibilityanddistinguishsensibilityfromthreshod.
