Fromthismoment,unitedanddetermined,wewillgoforwardtogether,dedicatedtotheultimateandundeniablegreatnessofthewholeman.Together--Togetherwewillwin.

Iacceptyournominationwithadeepsenseofhumility.Iaccept,too,theresponsibilitythatgoeswithit,andIseekyourcontinuedhelpandyourcontinuedguidance.MyfellowRepublicans,ourcauseistoogreatforanymantofeelworthyofit.Ourtaskwouldbetoogreatforanyman,didhenothavewithhimtheheartsandthehandsofthisgreatRepublicanParty,andIpromiseyoutonightthateveryfiberofmybeingisconsecratedtoourcause;thatnothingshallbelackingfromthestrugglethatcanbebroughttoitbyenthusiasm,bydevotion,andplainhardwork.

Inthisworldnoperson,noPartycanguaranteeanything,butwhatwecandoandwhatweshalldoistodeservevictory,andvictorywillbeours.

ThegoodLordraisedthismightyRepublictobeahomeforthebraveandtoflourishasthelandofthefree--nottostagnateintheswamplandofcollectivism,nottocringebeforethebullyingofcommunism.

Now,myfellowAmericans,thetidehasbeenrunningagainstfreedom.Ourpeoplehavefollowedfalseprophets.Wemust,andweshall,returntoprovenways--notbecausetheyareold,butbecausetheyaretrue.Wemust,andweshall,setthetidesrunningagaininthecauseoffreedom.Andthisparty,withitseveryaction,everyword,everybreath,andeveryheartbeat,hasbutasingleresolve,andthatisfreedom--freedommadeorderlyforthisNationbyourconstitutionalgovernment;freedomunderagovernmentlimitedbythelawsofnatureandofnature'sGod;freedombalancedsothatorderlackingliberty[sic]willnotbecometheslaveryoftheprisonshell[cell];balancedsothatlibertylackingorderwillnotbecomethelicenseofthemobandofthejungle.

Now,weAmericansunderstandfreedom.Wehaveearnedit;wehavelivedforit,andwehavediedforit.ThisNationanditspeoplearefreedom'smodelinasearchingworld.Wecanbefreedom'smissionariesinadoubtingworld.But,ladiesandgentlemen,firstwemustrenewfreedom'smissioninourownheartsandinourownhomes.

Duringfourfutileyears,theadministrationwhichweshallreplacehas--hasdistortedandlostthatvision.Ithastalkedandtalkedandtalkedandtalkedthewordsoffreedom,butithasfailedandfailedandfailedintheworksoffreedom.

Andbecauseofthisadministrationwearetonightaworlddivided;weareaNationbecalmed.Wehavelostthebriskpaceofdiversityandthegeniusofindividualcreativity.Weareploddingalongatapacesetbycentralizedplanning,redtape,ruleswithoutresponsibility,andregimentationwithoutrecourse.

Ratherthanusefuljobsinourcountry,ourpeoplehavebeenofferedbureaucratic"makework";ratherthanmoralleadership,theyhavebeengivenbreadandcircuses.Theyhavebeengivenspectacles,and,yes,they'veevenbeengivenscandals.

Tonight,thereisviolenceinourstreets,corruptioninourhighestoffices,aimlessnessamongstouryouth,anxietyamongourelders,andthere'savirtualdespairamongthemanywholookbeyondmaterialsuccessfortheinnermeaningoftheirlives.Andwhereexamplesofmoralityshouldbeset,theoppositeisseen.Smallmen,seekinggreatwealthorpower,havetoooftenandtoolongturnedeventhehighestlevelsofpublicserviceintomerepersonalopportunity.

Now,certainly,simplehonestyisnottoomuchtodemandofmeningovernment.Wefinditinmost.Republicansdemanditfromeveryone.Theydemanditfromeveryonenomatterhowexaltedorprotectedhispositionmightbe.Nowthe--thegrowingmenaceinourcountrytonight,topersonalsafety,tolife,tolimbandproperty,inhomes,inchurches,ontheplaygrounds,andplacesofbusiness,particularlyinourgreatcities,isthemountingconcern,orshouldbe,ofeverythoughtfulcitizenintheUnitedStates.

Securityfromdomesticviolence,nolessthanfromforeignaggression,isthemostelementaryandfundamentalpurposeofanygovernment,andagovernmentthatcannotfulfillthispurposeisonethatcannotlongcommandtheloyaltyofitscitizens.

Historyshowsus--itdemonstratesthatnothing,nothingpreparesthewayfortyrannymorethanthefailureofpublicofficialstokeepthestreetssafefrombulliesandmarauders.

Now,weRepublicansseeallthisasmore,muchmore,thantheresultofmerepoliticaldifferencesormerepoliticalmistakes.Weseethisastheresultofafundamentallyandabsolutelywrongviewofman,hisnature,andhisdestiny.Thosewhoseektoliveyourlivesforyou,totakeyourlibertiesinreturnforrelievingyouofyours,thosewhoelevatethestateanddowngradethecitizenmustseeultimatelyaworldinwhichearthlypowercanbesubstitutedforDivineWill,andthisNationwasfoundedupontherejectionofthatnotionandupontheacceptanceofGodastheauthoroffreedom.

Nowthosewhoseekabsolutepower,eventhoughtheyseekittodowhattheyregardasgood,aresimplydemandingtherighttoenforcetheirownversionofheavenonearth.They--andletmeremindyou,theyaretheveryoneswhoalwayscreatethemosthellishtyrannies.Absolutepowerdoescorrupt,andthosewhoseekitmustbesuspectandmustbeopposed.Theirmistakencoursestemsfromfalsenotions,ladiesandgentlemen,ofequality.Equality,rightlyunderstood,asourfoundingfathersunderstoodit,leadstolibertyandtotheemancipationofcreativedifferences.Wronglyunderstood,asithasbeensotragicallyinourtime,itleadsfirsttoconformityandthentodespotism.

FellowRepublicans,itisthecauseofRepublicanismtoresistconcentrationsofpower,privateorpublic,which--whichenforcesuchconformityandinflictsuchdespotism.ItisthecauseofRepublicanismtoensurethatpowerremainsinthehandsofthepeople.And,sohelpusGod,thatisexactlywhataRepublicanPresidentwilldowiththehelpofaRepublicanCongress.

ItisfurtherthecauseofRepublicanismtorestoreaclearunderstandingofthetyrannyofmanovermanintheworldatlarge.Itisourcausetodispelthefoggythinkingwhichavoidsharddecisionsinthedelusionthataworldofconflictwillsomehowmysteriouslyresolveitselfintoaworldofharmony,ifwejustdon'trocktheboatorirritatetheforcesofaggression--andthisishogwash.

ItisfurtherthecauseofRepublicanismtoremindourselves,andtheworld,thatonlythestrongcanremainfree,thatonlythestrongcankeepthepeace.

Now,Ineedn'tremindyou,ormyfellowAmericansregardlessofparty,thatRepublicanshaveshoulderedthishardresponsibilityandmarchedinthiscausebefore.ItwasRepublicanleadershipunderDwightEisenhowerthatkeptthepeace,andpassedalongtothisadministrationthemightiestarsenalfordefensetheworldhaseverknown.AndIneedn'tremindyouthatitwasthestrengthandthe[un]believablewilloftheEisenhoweryearsthatkeptthepeacebyusingourstrength,byusingitintheFormosaStraitsandinLebanonandbyshowingitcourageouslyatalltimes.

ItwasduringthoseRepublicanyearsthatthethrustofCommunistimperialismwasblunted.ItwasduringthoseyearsofRepublicanleadershipthatthisworldmovedcloser,nottowar,butclosertopeace,thanatanyothertimeinthelastthreedecades.

AndIneedn'tremindyou--butIwill--thatit'sbeenduringDemocraticyearsthatourstrengthtodeterwarhasstoodstill,andevengoneintoaplanneddecline.IthasbeenduringDemocraticyearsthatwehaveweaklystumbledintoconflict,timidlyrefusingtodrawourownlinesagainstaggression,deceitfullyrefusingtotellevenourpeopleofourfullparticipation,andtragically,lettingourfinestmendieonbattlefields,unmarkedbypurpose,unmarkedbyprideortheprospectofvictory.

Yesterday,itwasKorea.Tonight,itisVietnam.Makenobonesofthis.Don'ttrytosweepthisundertherug.WeareatwarinVietnam.AndyetthePresident,whoistheCommander-in-Chiefofourforces,refusestosay--refusestosay,mindyou,whetherornottheobjectiveoverthereisvictory.AndhisSecretaryofDefensecontinuestomisleadandmisinformtheAmericanpeople,andenoughofithasgoneby.

AndIneedn'tremindyou--butIwill--ithasbeenduringDemocraticyearsthatabillionpersonswerecastintoCommunistcaptivityandtheirfatecynicallysealed.

Today--Todayinourbelovedcountrywehaveanadministrationwhichseemseagertodealwithcommunismineverycoinknown--fromgoldtowheat,fromconsulatestoconfidences,andevenhumanfreedomitself.
