Thehistoryofchickens（Gallusdomestics）isstillabitofapuzzle.Scholarsagreethattheywerefirstdomesticatedfromawildformcalledredjunglefowl（Gallusgallus）,abirdthatstillrunswildinmostofsoutheastAsia,mostlikelyhybridizedwiththegrayjunglefowl（G.sonneratii）.Thatoccurredprobablyabout8,000yearsago.Recentresearchsuggests,however,theremayhavebeenmultipleotherdomesticationeventsindistinctareasofSouthandSoutheastAsia,southernChina,Thailand,Burma,andIndia.

Sincethewildprogenitorofchickensisstillliving,severalstudieshavebeenabletoexaminethebehaviorsofwildanddomesticanimals.Domesticatedchickensarelessactive,havefewersocialinteractionswithotherchickens,arelessaggressivetowould-bepredators,arelesssusceptibletostress,andarelesslikelytogolookingforforeignfoodsourcesthantheirwild

counterparts.Domesticchickenshaveincreasedadultbodyweightandsimplifiedplumage;domesticchickeneggproductionstartsearlier,ismorefrequent,andproduceslargereggs.

TheearliestfirmevidenceforchickensineastAfricaareillustrationsfromseveralsitesinNewKingdomEgypt（1550–1069）.ChickenswereintroducedintowesternAfricamultipletimes,arrivingatIronAgesitessuchasJenne-JenoinMali,KirikongoinBurkinaFasoandDaboyainGhanabythemid-firstmillenniumCE.ChickensarrivedinthesouthernLevantabout2500BCEandinIberiaabout2000BCE.

ChickenswerebroughttothePolynesianislandsfromSoutheastAsiabyPacificOceansailorsduringtheLapitaexpansion,about3,300yearsago.WhileitwaslongassumedthatchickenshadbeenbroughttotheAmericasbytheSpanishconquistadors,presumablypre-ColumbianchickenshavebeenidentifiedatseveralsitesthroughouttheAmericas,mostnotablyatthesiteofElArenal-1inChile,ca1350CE.

Twolong-standingdebatesinchickenhistorystillremainatleastpartiallyunresolved.ThefirstisthepossibleearlypresenceofdomesticatedchickensinChina,priortodatesfromsoutheastAsia;thesecondiswhetherornottherearepre-ColumbianchickensintheAmericas.

Geneticstudiesintheearly21stcenturyfirsthintedatmultipleoriginsofdomestication.TheearliestarchaeologicalevidencetodateisfromChinaabout5400BCE,ingeographicallywidespreadsitessuchasCishan（Hebeiprovince,ca5300BCE）,Beixin（Shandongprovince,ca5000BCE）,andXian（Shaanxiprovince,ca4300BCE）.In2021,afewstudieswerepublishedsupportingtheidentificationofearlychickendomesticationinnorthernandcentralChina（Xiangetal.）.However,theirresultsremaincontroversial.

A2021studybyChinesebioanthropologistMasakiEdaandcolleaguesof280birdbonesreportedaschickenfromNeolithicandBronzeagesitesinnorthernandcentralChinafoundthatonlyahandfulcouldsecurelybeidentifiedaschicken.GermanarchaeologistJorisPetersandcolleagues（2021）lookedatenvironmentalproxiesinadditiontootherresearchandconcludedthatthehabitatsconducivetojunglefowlweresimplynotpresentearlyenoughinChinatoallowforthedomesticationpracticetohavetakenplace.TheseresearcherssuggestthatchickenswerearareoccurrenceinnorthernandCentralChina,andthusprobablyanimportfromsouthernChinaorSoutheastAsiawhereevidenceofdomesticationisstronger.

Basedonthosefindings,anddespitethefactthatsoutheastAsianprogenitorsiteshavenotasyetbeenidentified,anorthernChinesedomesticationeventseparatefromthatofsouthernChinaandSoutheastAsiadoesnotatpresentseemlikely.

Pre-ColumbianChickensinAmerica

In2007,AmericanarchaeologistAliceStoreyandcolleaguesidentifiedchickenbonesatthesiteofEl-Arenal1onChile'scoast,inacontextdatedwellbeforethe16th-centurymedievalSpanishcolonization,ca.1321–1407calCE.Thediscoveryisconsideredevidenceofpre-ColumbiancontactofSouthAmericabyPolynesiansailors,butthatisstillasomewhatcontroversialnotioninAmericanarchaeology.

However,DNAstudieshaveprovidedgeneticsupport,inthatchickenbonesfromel-ArenalcontainahaplogroupwhichhasbeenidentifiedatEasterIsland,whichwasfoundedbyPolynesiansaround1200CE.ThefoundingmitochondrialDNAclusteridentifiedasPolynesianchickensincludesA,B,E,andD.Tracingsub-haplogroups,PortuguesegeneticistAgustoLuzuriaga-Neiraandcolleaguesidentifiedsub-haplotypeE1a（b）whichisfoundinbothEasterIslandandel-Arenalchickens,akeypieceofgeneticevidencesupportingthepre-ColumbianpresenceofPolynesianchickensonthecoastofSouthAmerica.

Additionalevidencesuggestingpre-ColumbiancontactbetweenSouthAmericansandPolynesianshasalsobeenidentified,intheformofancientandmodernDNAofhumanskeletonsinbothlocations.Currently,itseemslikelythatthechickensatel-ArenalwerelikelybroughttherebyPolynesiansailors.
