Abstract

Futuredataandtransmissionnetworkswillconsistofelementssuch

asrouters,switches,DenseWavelengthDivisionMultiplexing(DWDM)

systems,Add-DropMultiplexors(ADMs),photoniccross-connects

(PXCs),opticalcross-connects(OXCs),etc.thatwilluseGeneralized

Multi-ProtocolLabelSwitching(GMPLS)todynamicallyprovision

resourcesandtoprovidenetworksurvivabilityusingprotectionand

restorationtechniques.

ThisdocumentdescribesthearchitectureofGMPLS.GMPLSextends

MPLStoencompasstime-division(e.g.,SONET/SDH,PDH,G.709),

wavelength(lambdas),andspatialswitching(e.g.,incomingportor

fibertooutgoingportorfiber).ThefocusofGMPLSisonthe

controlplaneofthesevariouslayerssinceeachofthemcanuse

physicallydiversedataorforwardingplanes.Theintentionisto

coverboththesignalingandtheroutingpartofthatcontrolplane.

1.Introduction

Thearchitecturedescribedinthisdocumentcoversthemainbuilding

blocksneededtobuildaconsistentcontrolplaneformultiple

switchinglayers.Itdoesnotrestrictthewaythattheselayers

worktogether.Differentmodelscanbeapplied,e.g.,overlay,

augmentedorintegrated.Moreover,eachpairofcontiguouslayers

maycollaborateindifferentways,resultinginanumberofpossible

combinations,atthediscretionofmanufacturersandoperators.

Thisarchitectureclearlyseparatesthecontrolplaneandthe

forwardingplane.Inaddition,italsoclearlyseparatesthecontrol

planeintwoparts,thesignalingplanecontainingthesignaling

protocolsandtheroutingplanecontainingtheroutingprotocols.

ThisdocumentisageneralizationoftheMulti-ProtocolLabel

Switching(MPLS)architecture[RFC3031],andinsomecasesmaydiffer

slightlyfromthatarchitecturesincenonpacket-basedforwarding

planesarenowconsidered.Itisnottheintentionofthisdocument

todescribeconceptsalreadydescribedinthecurrentMPLS

architecture.Thegoalistodescribespecificconceptsof

GeneralizedMPLS(GMPLS).

However,someoftheconceptsexplainedhereafterarenotpartofthe

currentMPLSarchitectureandareapplicabletobothMPLSandGMPLS

(i.e.,linkbundling,unnumberedlinks,andLSPhierarchy).Since

theseconceptswereintroducedtogetherwithGMPLSandsincetheyare

ofparamountimportanceforanoperationalGMPLSnetwork,theywill

bediscussedhere.

Theorganizationoftheremainderofthisdocumentisasfollows.We

beginwithanintroductionofGMPLS.Wethenpresentthespecific

GMPLSbuildingblocksandexplainhowtheycanbecombinedtogether

tobuildanoperationalGMPLSnetwork.Specificdetailsofthe

separatebuildingblockscanbefoundinthecorrespondingdocuments.
