orscenesofviolenceandsexaslongasthechildrenarequiet.Thisisselfishlyirresponsible.Televisionobstructspeople’scommunicationbecausemanyprogramsrequireabsolutesilenceandattentionandnoonedarestoopenhismouthduringaprogram.Televisionisundoubtedlyagreatinvention,butoneofthemaincontroversiesaboutitseffectonmodernpeople’slivesisthatviewersarenotselectiveenough.Whenyouallowallkindsofinformation,usefulormeaningless,tobombardyou,youloseinitiativeintheprocess.Yousitforhourafterhourandyougetveryreceptiveandveryunquestioninganditseemstometheimportantthinginlifeistobeactive,todothings,tothinkthingsandtobeascreativeaspossible,andtelevision,inaway,preventsallthese.Televisionisdoingirreparableharm.Beforeweletthis“one-eyemonster”intoourhomes,weneverfounditdifficulttooccupyoursparetime.Weusedtoenjoycivilizedpleasures,weusedtohavehobbies,andusedtoentertainourfriendsandbeentertainedbythem.Weusedtoreadbooksandlistentomusicandtalktoourfamily.Butnowwerushhomejusttogulpdownourmealstobeintimeforthisorthatprogram.Wehaveevengivenupsittingatthetableandhavingaleisurelyeveningmeal,exchangingwhathappenedtoeachandeveryoneofusduringtheday.IthinkinawayTVismakingourmindsdull.There’salimittotheamountofcreativetalentavailableintheworld.Everyday,televisionconsumesvastquantitiesofcreativegeniusinus.Whenmillionsofpeoplearoundtheworldwatchthesameprogram(sometimesapoorlychoreographedone),thewholeworldbecomesavillage,andsocietyisreducedtoapre-literatecondition.Webecomeutterlydependentonthetwomostprimitivemediaofcommunication:
picturesandspokenwords.Andwebecomesolazy,wechoosetospendafinedayinsemi-darkness,gluedtothetube,ratherthangooutintotheworld.

Firstoff,criticismbringspressuretoyoungpeople.Towakethemupandfeeltherealityofcompetitioninthesocietyandthehardshiptheyhavetofaceinordertosurvive.Thisisgood;butsometimes,givingyoungpeopletoomuchstresscanleadthemastray.Intheworstcaseofscenario,theyouthmayactouttheirpressurebydoingsomethingirresponsibleandcynical,suchasdrugabuseandpronenesstoviolence.Youngpeopleareusuallycounter-reactionaltotheirparentsconstructiveadvice.Theytendtorebelagainsttheirparents’wish.Theirparentsmaygoonewayandtheywouldgoexactlytheoppositewayinordertoshowtheiridentityandtheirdisobediencetotheirparents’authority.Sometimestoomuchcriticismwilldeprivetheyoungpeopleoftheirself-confidenceinlife.Theybecomedoubtfuloftheirabilityandthisisharmful.
Ithinkthewesternideaofeducationforyoungpeopleisalwaystoencouragethem,tobuilduptheirconfidenceinordertodiguptheirpotential.Torecognizetheirachievementandoverlooksomeofthesmalldemerits.Andthroughthis,youngpeoplebecomemoresureoftheirlifeandwillcopewithdifficultiesinlifewithmorecertainty.Thisiswithoutadoubtbeneficialtoyoungpeopleasitimprovestheirchancesofbecomingsuccessfulanduseful.Youngpeoplearegreatatimitatingtheirparents.Sowhenparentssetupanexample,theyfollowsuits.Whenaparentconstantlycriticizesakid,thechildbeginstothinkthisisnormalandcommonpractice.Andwhenheorshegrowsup,he/shewillperformthesamethingonhisorherchild.Asaresult,thisbadhabitwillcontinueintothenextgeneration,carryingwithitbitternessintherelationshipbetweenparentandchildandlossofconfidenceinlifeinthenextgeneration.
Anunhealthyparentingtraditionisformedinthefamily.That’stragic.Youngpeople,especiallythosewithhigherEmotionalQuotient,oftenfeelinsulted,ashamedandinsecurewhenthey’recriticized.Theyunderstandtheirownfeelingsandaremoreacutetoothers’opinionsaboutthem.Theybegintothinkthey’reunwantedanduselesswhentheyreceivetoomuchnegativecommentsontheirbehavior.Suchyoungpeoplewillthriveinahealthyandpositiveenvironment;andcouldwitherunderpressureandnegativekarma.

Whenyoungpeoplereceivecriticismthey’reabsorbingexperiencefromthecritic.Thiswillbebeneficialtothembecausethey’retoldofwhat’srightandwhat’swrongbyaseniorfellow.Whenyoungpeoplegetovertheirheadsandbecomeoverambitiousandarrogant,weneedsomesortofawake-up-calltomakethemsoberandalerttotherealityagain.Criticismisrighttheretohelpthemoutinthiscategory.Lifeisnotjustsunshineandroses,thebitternesscanbeprovidedbysomeharshwords.Insteadofhurtingtheyoungperson’sfeeling,ifcontrollednicely,
criticismcanserveasatooltorestorethebalanceinourmind,andreturnustowhatwereallyare.
Truewordshurt,butthey’renotwithstandinghelpful.Youngpeoplelackself-control.Theymaydowhattheyenjoyexcessively,suchasinternetgames,drinking,watchingtoomuchTVorplayingtoomuchsports.Weneedsomeonetodisciplinethemandhelpthemplantheirtime.
Sointhissense,in-timecriticismcanpreventtheyoungfromsquanderingtime.Weonlyliveinthisworldforanaverageof75yearsorso.Ifcriticismcansaveyoufromwastingyourtime,it’sjustassavingpartofyourlife.Youngpeopleshouldgetusedtocriticismintheearlypartoftheirlifebecause,verylikely,laterintheirlife,saywhenthey’re30or40,theremaystillbecriticism.
Ifparentsnevercriticizeakid,evenwhenheorshehasdonesomethingwrong,thisisbeingover-protective.
Andthekid,consequently,willbespoiledbytheover-indulgencefromtheparents.Isthatreallyresponsibleforthekid’sdevelopment?
Whenthekidbecomestouchyatother’scriticism,thenhemaylosealotofchancesforprogress.Noonewoulddareapproachhimwiththerightadvice,justbecausehe’stoosensitiveaboutit.Theabilitytoacceptcriticism,asagoodhabitofself-improvement,shouldbeformedwhenapersonisstillyoung.Thebenefitofitwillgoonincreasingthroughouthis/herlife.Criticism,asareality-check,willmaketheyoungpeoplemoreawareoftheseriousnessoftheirproblems.Andsomeyouthmaydeveloptheirpotentialrapidlyunderproperamountofcriticism.Theybegintotakethingsseriouslyandtakemattersintotheirownhands.Undersuchafeeling,theybegintothink,“HowcanIsolvethisproblemmorecreatively.”Andintheprocess,theymayevenhitabigidea.IfIremem
