Whyisapieceofpapermarked$10worthmorethanonemarked$1?
Youcouldsaythereisnoreason.It'struethataspecialkindofpaperisusedtomakedollarbills,andtheyarepretty,butthat'snotwhatmakesthemvaluable.Therealreasonmoneyisvaluableisthateveryonebelievesitis.
Ancienteconomieshadnopapermoneyorcoins.Someusedbarter----tradingonethingforanother.Othersusedallkindsofobjectsasmoney.Anyobjectwoulddo,aslongastherewasnotanunlimitedamountofit.Animalsormetalswerepopular,andsoweremanufacturedproductslikejewelryorweapons.WealthinancientGreecewasmeasuredintoolsorcattle.Thiskindofmoneyhadtwopurposes.First,itwasusefulinitself.Toolsandcattlecanbeusedforfarming.Andsecond,itwasawaytosymbolizeandmeasurevalue.Ahouse,forexample,wouldbevaluedatacertainnumberoftoolsorcattle.Thisgreatlysimplifiedtrade.Othersocietiesusedmoneythatwastotallysymbolic.Forinstance,AmericanIndiansusedwampum,whichis
