A.POLICY

ItisGEpolicynottousematerialsthatcouldposeatoxichazardthroughdirectexposuretoconsumersordirectorindirectexposuretofood,iceand/orwater.

B.PURPOSE

Thepurposeofthisprocedureistoformalizeaninstructiontopreventtheproductionofproductsthatcouldpresentatoxichazardtoconsumers.Thisdocumentalsoestablishesaproceduretoverifycomplianceandmaintainappropriaterecords.WhileotherstandardsandregulationsexistintheindustrythisStandingInstruction(SI)willfocusonlyontherequirementstomeetGEToxicitystandards.ThisToxicitySIdefinesaproactiveprocedureapplicabletoallGEproductssoldinallcountries.

C.REQUIREMENTS

1.IdentificationofPossibleToxicityConcern

Ataminimum,GEconsidersthataPossibleToxicityConcernmaybepresentifanyofthesubstancesontheMaterialofConcern(MOC)listareincludedinaproduct,part,material,oritisdirectlyexposedtoaconsumer,ordirectlyorindirectlyexposedtofood,iceand/orwater.AllGEproducts,includingparts,kits,packagingandaccessoriessoldworldwidemustbereviewedtodeterminewhetheranyPossibleToxicityConcernsexist.Aconcernmayexistifduringnormalinstallationanduseofthefinishedproductbyaconsumerareexposedtoatoxicsubstanceby:

∙inhalation

∙skincontact

∙ingestion

TodetermineifaPossibleToxicityConcernexists,themanufacturer/assemblermustidentifythedifferentmaterialsusedineachproduct.Thisincludesanyadditivesthatarecompoundedtoformthefinalpartmaterialandanysubstanceusedinthemanufacturingprocess.Thisinformationshallbesubmitted:

∙Priortoproductionaspartoftheproductionapprovalprocess

∙Priortoanychanges

∙AsrequiredperiodicallybyGE

Toxicconcernsmayresultfromintendeduseorreasonablyforeseeablemisuse.Theseconcernsmaybeassociatedwithproductshippingandconsumerhandlingduringinstallationordisposal.

MOCsmayappearinunexpectedplaces;leadinbrassorsteel,asbestosfillersinsealantsorplastics,andflame-retardants,colorants,oradditivesinplastics.

UnintentionaluseofMOCsshouldbeeliminatedentirely.Insomecases,afterthoroughreview,someintentionalusesofMOCsmaybeappropriate.Usemaybeallowedifnoalternativesexistandtherisktotheconsumerhasbeendeterminedtobeconsistentwiththelawandcompanypolicy.IfaMOCispresent,itisimportanttounderstanditsroleorfunctioninthematerialtodetermineifitsuseisacceptable.

2.GE’sResponsibility

ThepurchasingorganizationBuyerisresponsiblefor:

∙Ensuringthesupplierisinformedoftherequirementsinmeetingthisspecification

∙ForwardingthemostrecentversionofPartIandAppendixesoftheGEToxicityProceduretosupplierssotheywillbeabletoidentify&reportanymaterialspresentingaPossibleToxicityConcern.

∙Whenasupplierwillnotsubmitorconform,theBuyershallintervenetoobtainconformanceoridentifyanalternatesupplier

Theengineerdevelopingparts,makingachangetoanypartoroverseeingaSourcedProductisresponsiblefor:

∙SendingtheMaterialInformationRequest(MIR)AppendixBoftheSI900000S004P002tothesupplierandallrequireddocuments,filesandinformationtoassistthesupplierincompletingthesubmission

∙ForcomplexassembliesandsourcedproductssendAppendixCoftheSI900000S004P002

∙Obtainingfromthesupplierorsupplier’sauthorizedrepresentativealltheinformationspecifiedontheMaterialInformationRequest(MIR).

∙ObtaininganyadditionalinformationrequiredforGEtodeterminewhetheruseoftheparticularmaterialpresentsahazard.

∙Communicatinginformationontoxicityrequirementsandpartapplicationtothesupplierasearlyinthedesignprocessaspossible.

∙ThoroughlyexaminingtheBOM(orequivalent)andtheproducttoobtaintheinformationnecessaryfortoxicityreview,asMOCsmayappearinunexpectedplaces.

4.Supplier’sResponsibility

InordertoconformtoGE’sToxicityCompliancePolicy,itisrequiredthateachsupplierfullydiscloseanyMOC’sasdefinedinStandingInstruction900000,Section4,Part1“ToxicityPolicy-Supplier”.Thissubmissionshouldbecompletedasdescribedbelow.

IfnoneofthematerialsdefinedintheToxicityPolicyareusedinthecomponentsfromthissupplier,orinanyprocessesusedtomakethosecomponents,thesupplierstillmustsocertifyinanofficiallettertoGE.

Thisdisclosurelettermustbewrittenonthesupplier’sletterhead,andmaybesubmittedinhardcopyformorelectronicallyviae-mail.AllofthefollowinginformationmustbeincludedintheToxicitySubmittalletter:

∙Suppliernameandaddress

∙Date–whichmustberevisedanytimetheletterisre-submittedtoGE

∙RevisionofSI900000,Sect.4thatwasreferencedtocreatethesubmittalletter

∙GEPartnumber(s)andpartnames

∙Ifthispartdirectlyorindirectlycontactsfood,iceorwaterorisexposedtoskincontactbytheconsumer,providematerialcompositionaldisclosure(MSDSsheetsorequivalentmaterialcertifications)ofallmaterials.

∙Allflameretardantsandplasticizersaretobeidentified,regardlessofwhetherthepartcontactsfood,iceorwaterorisexposedtoskincontactbytheconsumer.

∙Signaturebyanauthorizedrepresentativeofthecompany

∙ThesuppliermustsendtheToxicitySubmittalLettertotherequestor’sattentionwithacopytothebuyer.

∙Mustdisclosetheconcentration/quantityofeachMaterialofConcern(MOC).Units,suchasppmorpercent,mustbeprovidedforeachconcentrationutilizingthetableprovidedbytheengineerintheMIR

∙IfaMOCispresent,indicatethemanufacturerandgradeofthematerial.Manufacturer/gradeidentificationformaterialsfromsub-tiersuppliersinassembliesorcomplexformulationsispreferred,butnotrequired.

∙Forpartsthatarenon-contactingaccordingtobulletpoint5above:

Adescriptionofmaterialcompositionisuseful,butnotrequired,unlessitisnotmadeclearwhatthebasematerialis.However,tableentrieswithconcentrationsforeachMOCarestillrequiredinallcases.

∙IfaMOCisnotpresent,“No,”"0","0%",ortheequivalent mustbeenteredinthe“Amount”column.

Forasimpleassembly,thepartcontainingtheMOCshouldbenamedinthe“LocationinProduct”column.(Foramorecomplexassemblyorsourcedproduct,pleaseusethespreadsheetinAppendixCoftheSI900000S004P002)ThisdocumentshouldbemadeavailabletothesupplieralongwiththeMaterialInformationRequest.

ThesupplierisresponsibletonotifyGEofanychangetothesuppliedproduct,part,material,orprocess.
