ThelatestresultscomefromtheChang’e-4mission,runbytheChinaNationalSpaceAdministration.LaunchedinDecember2018andreachingthemooninearlyJanuary2019,themissionbecamethefirsttolandonthefarsideofthenaturalsatellite,targetingaregionnearthelunarsouthpolecalledtheSouthPole-AitkenBasin.TheChang’e-4roverisstilloperationaltodayandhasbeenslowlymovingacrossthisregion,travelingafewhundredmeterssinceitlanded.
UsingaradarinstrumentonChang’e-4,researchershavefoundthattheroverislikelysittingondifferentlayersofejecta(喷出物)andaveryclearorderoflayerscanbeseen.Therover’sradarinstrumentwasabletoenterupto40metersbelowthesurfaceofthemoon,morethantwicethedistanceachievedbytheformer,theChang’e-3mission,whichlandedonthemoonnearsideinDecember2013.Datafromthelatestmissionshowthreedifferentlayersbeneaththerover.ItisnotcurrentlypossibletodatethelayersunderChang’e-4.Buttheydoprovidesomeinformationaboutlunarhistorydatingbackaboutfourbillionyears.
