Ifconsumersofthemediacouldbetaughtatanearlyagetoexaminemessagescritically---i.e.,tothinkcarefullyaboutwhatisbeingcommunicated---theywouldbeabletotakeadvantageoftheinformationandenjoytheentertainmentwithoutbeinghurtbyit.Thekeytocriticalthinkingisrecognizingthepurposesofthenewsorscriptwriters,theadvisors,andsoon.Arebothsidesofanissuebeingpresented?

Anotherrecognizedadvantageofthemediaisthatitgivesthepeopletheinformationtheyneedintheirdailylives:

weatherandtrafficreportsaregoodexamples.Whilecommercialsandadvertisingdonotnecessarilypresentaccurateinformation,theydomakepeopleawareoftheavailabilityofproductsthatcouldimprovetheirlives.Inaddition,theycreatealargerdemandforsomeitems,whichmayleadtoareductionintheirprice.

Whilethemediacanbeavaluablemeansofeducatingthepublic,whenmostpeopleturnontheTVsetortheradio,theywanttobeentertained.Asaresult,mostprogrammingconsistsofmovies,plays,music,comedies,gameshows,andsportsevents.Someoftheseofferingsareoflowquality,but,ontheotherhand,manyarefuntowatchandinteresting,writtenandpresentedwell.
