Comingfromacompanythathas“invent”aspartofourbrand,aspartofoursignature,IsometimesbeginspeechesbysayingthatinventionandinnovationhavebeenparttheDNAofHP’sformorethansixtyyears.Ourscientistsandengineerstodaygeneratemorethan11patentseveryday.Wespendmorethan4billiondollarsayearonRD.Soinventionispartofourfutureaswellaspartofourpast.
ThatallsoundsprettyimpressiveuntilyouthinkaboutChina’shistory,andyourealizethat“invent”hasbeenpartofChina’sDNAformorethan5,000years.EveryschoolchildinAmericalearnsaboutChina’smanygiftstothisworld—fromtheinventionofpaper,togunpowder,thewheelbarrow,thecompass,acupuncture—rightuptothefirstblastfurnaceandthefirstuseofironcasting,backinthesixthcentury.
Asacompany,weactuallyatHPareespeciallyindebtedtoamannamedBiSheng,whohadthevisionin1045A.D.toinventtheworld’sfirstmovabletype,whichledtoitsfirstprinter—afull300yearsbeforeGutenberg’sinventionofmovabletypechangedtheWesternworld.Sotoday,IwanttoissueabelatedthankyoutoBiShengforhavingtheforesighttosetinmotionaprocessthatwouldeventuallyleadtoa20billionbusinessforHP.
ThatgreattraditionofinventionandinnovationhascertainlybeencarriedonhereatTsinghua,wheresomeofthefinestinstructorsintheworldtodayareworkingtotrainsomeofthefinestscientistsandengineers.It’sabitironicthatthisschoolwasoriginallyestablishednearly100yearsagoasaplacewhereyoungChinesecouldgotoAmericaandotherwesternnationstolearnfromus.Today,therestoftheworld,Ithink,hasmuchtolearnfromChina.
It’salwaysstruckmethattheprocessofinventionisalittlebitliketheprocessofbeingacollegestudent.Afterall,asaninventor,yougointoalabandyouhaveastrongbutperhapsvagueideaofwhatyouwanttoachieve.Byworkinghard,experimenting,learningalongtheway,andusingasaguidetheworkofthosewhowentbeforeyou–youadvancedowntheroadtowardsdiscovery.Youmaynotendupwhereyoustarted–orevenwhereyouexpected,butifyouaresuccessful,thenbeginsanotherdifficultprocessoftryingtomakeyourinventionworkintheworldaroundyou.
Likeinventors,manyofyouhavetraveledthesameroadoverthelastfouryearshereinuniversity.Thepersonyouaretoday–thegoalsyouhavetoday,thedreamsyouhavetoday–maybedifferentfromtheonesyouhadwhenyoufirstcamehere.Andnow,youarebecomingpreparedtotakeallthatyou’velearnedhereandmakeitworkintheworldaroundyou.
Ibelievethatyoungpeoplearegraduatingtodayintoaworldfilledwithmorehopeandmorepromisethaninanyothertimeinourhistory.Iknowsometimesthatmightsoundstrange,becausewethinkalwaysofthedangersandchallengesintheworldaroundus.ButIhavestudiedhistoryinmylife.Idobelievethisisaneraofgreatpromiseandgreatopportunity.
Forthoseofyouwhohaveseenourads,youknowthattheyendwiththephrase,“everythingispossible.”Acynicmightsaythatjustamarketingslogan–butIactuallybelievethat.Idon’tthinkeveryiseasy,Idon’tthinkthingshappensrightaway.ButIdothinkthateverythingispossible.
Foralltheremarkableadvancementswehaveseeninrecentyears,nothinghasmatchedthepowerofinformationtechnologytochangeourworldforthebetter.Andinthenextdecade,itwilltakeustoplaceswecanonlyimaginetoday.
Chinaistheworld’sfastest-growingeconomy;theworld’sleaderindirectforeigninvestment;oneoftheworld’slargesttradingnations--aleaderonboththeproductionandconsumptionofinformationtechnology.Chinaispoisedtoplayahugepartinthatfuture–andthestudentswhograduatefromTsinghuaUniversityarepoisedtoshapethefutureoftechnologylikeneverbefore.Nowlikeanyuniversitystudents,Iknowforyoutheroadaheadhasmuchuncertainty.ButifthereisonethingIhavelearnedinthepast20yearsinthisindustry,itisthattheprinciplethatyouhavelearnedinsidethewallsofTsinghua,theprincipleismoretrueoutsidetheuniversitythaninside.TheprincipleIamspeakingofisthis:
thatgreatleaders–likegreatorganizations,greatcompanies,andgreatnations–greatleadersaredefinednotsimplybytheircapabilities,butbytheircharacter.Notjustbythecompanytheyare,butbythecompanytheykeep.Notbysuccessalone–butasTsinghuateaches,withself-disciplineandsocialconcerninequalbalance.
Tobehonest,IwishIcouldsaythattheroadtolearningthatlessonformewaseasy.IwishIcouldtellyouthatthedayIgraduatedfromuniversityIknewexactlyhowallthepieceswouldfittogether,thatIknewexactlywhatIwantedtodofromdayoneandmylifeasbeenanicestraitlineandcarefulplaneversince.Thetruthis,Ididn’tbeginmycareerasatechnologist.ItooktoheartthewisdomofConfucius–whotaughtusthatoneshould“studythepastifyouwoulddefinethefuture”–andImajoredinmedievalhistoryandphilosophyatStanfordUniversity.Asperhapsyoucanappreciate,thatofdegreewasnotingreatdemandwhenIgraduatedfromUniversity.
SoIwasn’tsurewhattodoaftercollage,soIwenttolawschoolbecausethat’swhatmyfatherwantedmetodo.ButfoundIdidn’tlikelawschool;Ididn’thaveanypassionforit.Iquitafteronesemesterquitafterasemester,andwanderedoffintotheworldtofindmyself.Ididsomestrangethings.IjoinedacommercialbrokeragecompanyandthereItyped,Iansweredthephones–Iwaswhatwecallasecretary.ThenIwentofftoItalytoteachEnglishtoItalianbusinessmen.Then,finally,Idecidedtoapplytobusinessschool.AndthereIlearnedaboutmarketingandoperationsandstatisticsandotherskillsnecessaryforbusiness–butperhapsmoreimportantly,Ihadprofessors–likethestudentsheredo--whochallengedme,whotaughtmeadifferentnotionofwhatwaspossible,whoforcedmetoseemylifeinnewways.AndIthink,inaverygreatmeasure--thatiswhatleadershipisabout,thatiswhateducationisabout,thatiswhatcharacterisallabout.
Yousee,Ithinkoneofmostimportantqualitiesaleadercanbringistheability,theenergy,thedesiretounlockpotentialinothers.Ithinkleadershipisultimatelyabouthelpingotherpeopleachievemorethantheythinkispossible;itisabouthelpingpeopleseeadifferentsetofpossibilitiesforthemselves.
I’vebeenaskedalotsinceifthereareanylessonsI’velearnedaboutcharacterandleadership.Therearethreelessons,IthinkthatIhavelearned,thatcontinuetoinstructmetothisday,thatcontinuetoguidemeinbothbusinessandinlife.
Thefirstlessonisthatvaluesmatterandcharactercountsandthat.Thefirstlessonisthatvaluesmatterandcharactercounts,andthatnomatterhowmuchthingschange,fundamentalvaluesshouldn’t.Forthoseofyouwhoarejuststartingoutyourcareer,youwillfindthatinleadership—asperhapsinlife—themostimportantdecisionsyoumake,andthetoughestdecisionsyoumakeareoftenthedecisionsyoumakealone.Andwhenyoumakethosedecisions,thereisanopportunitytobebuffetedaboutbyandconfusedbyallkindsofthings:
conventionalwisdom,andpopularemotion…andmaybebycynicismanddoubtaswell.
IthinkleadershiptakeswhatIwouldcallastronginternalcompass.AndIusethetermcompassbecausewhatdoesacompassdo?
Whenthewindsarehowling,andthestormsraging,andtheskyissocloudythatyouhavenothingtonavigateby,acompasstellsyouwheretrueNorthis.AndIthinkwhenapersonisinadifficultsituation,alonelysituation;youhavetorelyonthatcompass.WhoamI?
WhatdoIbelieve?
DoIbelieveIamdoingtherightthingsfortherightreasonsinthebestwayIcan?
Sometimesthat’sallyouhave.
ThesecondlessonI’velearnedaboutcharacterandleadershipisthatleadership,justlikesuccess,isnotajourney,itisadestination.Itisperhapsaclichétosaythatleadershipisajourneynotadestinationbutitisaclichébecauseitistrue,leadershipisajourney.Theonlyconstantinanyofourlives,whetheryou’rerunningacompanyorrunningafamily,orperhapsrunningacountry,ischange.Butchangehasneverbeenasconstantandasfastasitistoday.
Tome,thedividinglinebetweenwillincreasinglyseparatethewinnersfromthelosersinthemarketplacethoseindividuals,thedividinglinebetweenthoseindividualswhotrulymakeadifferenceandacontributioninthe21stcenturyfromthosewhodonot—isthelinebetweenthosewhoembracechangeandthosewhorunawayfromit.Itwillbebetweenthosewhoseektoleadchange,andthosewhofindrefugeinthestatusquoorintheircomfortzones.
AndthethirdlessonI’velearnedaboutleadershipandsuccessisthatrealpowercomesintheconnectionsbetweenallkindsofthings;butmostimportantlyrealpowercomesfromtheconnectionsbetweenpeople.Powercomesnotfromthosewhostandalone,.butfromthosewhocanworkbestwithothers,andreachouttootherstoachieveadesiredoutcome.Andfindingthoseconnectionsandrecognizingthoseconnectionsispartof
