ThePhoneRangAgain

   MrsMoorehadworkedhardalldayattheoffice,andshewaslookingforwardtoarelaxingeveningathome.

   Justasshewalkedinthedoor,thetelephonebegantoring.Shedashedtoanswerthephoneandfoundthatthecallerwasamantryingtosellhersomelightbulbs.Sherefusedandhungupthephone.

   Shesmelleddinnercookingandwentintoseehowherchildrenweregettingalongwiththemeal.Everythingwasreadyexceptsettingthetable,soMrsMoorewentupstairstochangeclothes.

   Justasshereachedtheheadofthestairs,thetelephonerangagain.WhenMrsMooreansweredit,shefoundoutthatherhusbandwouldn'tbehomefordinner.

   Aftershechangedclothes,shewentbackdownstairstoeat.Duringdinner,thephonerangtwice.Hersistercalledtoaskaboutthefamilyzs,andagroupwantedhertodosomevolunteerwork.Sheandthechildrenfinisheddinnerandbegancleaningupthekitchen.Thephonerangagain.Theneighbourswantedtoborrowthegardenhose.°.

   Afterthekitchenwascleaned.MrsMooresatdownwithasightoreadwhilethechildrendidtheirhomework.Thephonerangagain.

   Withoutevenansweringit,MrsMoorecalledtoherchildren,"Getready,we'reallgoingtoamovie."

   WhenBillydiscoveredhisbikemissingthenextmorning,therewasawidespreadinvestigationbythepolice,hisparents,andtheneighbours.Noonehadseenthebikesincethedaybefore.AsBillywalkedoffdownthesidewalk,headingfortheschoo(bus,hisattentionwasattractedbysomethingblackglaringathimfromunderahedge.Heapproachedslowly,thensuddenlybrokeintoarun.Thereunderthehedgewashismotorcyclewithonebadlydentedfender.

   Hereachedforthehandlebarstopullitfromunderthebushes.Whenheretractedhishand,therewasafamiliarstickysubstanceonhisfingers.Tastingthebrownsweetness,Billysmiledsecretlytohimself.Heknewhehaddiscoveredwhohadtakenhismotorcycleforaspin.

Theinkfromthetypewriterribbongothishandsverydirty,sohewashedthemandwashedthem.Whilehewaswashinghishands,henoticedthathisfingernailsweremuchtoolong.Hecutthemverycarefullyandthenwentbacktohisdesk.Heputasheetofpaperintohistypewriter.lookedoutofthewiudow,andlookedathiswatch.Itwasnoon.

   "I'llgetsomelunchnow,".hesaidtohimself."AfterlunchI'llwritethatpaper,ifIdon'tdoanythingelse."

inComptonStreet.Likemanybachelorsapproachingmiddleage,bewasgettingrathersetinhisways.HecaughtthesametraintoLondoneverymorning,atehislunchinthesamecrowdedrestaurantneartheofficewhereheworkedandalwayscamehomeonthe6.00train.PeopleweresousedtoseeingJonathansetoffataquarterpasteight,dressedina.sjmpledarksuit.wearingablackbowlerhatandcarryingarolledumbrellaonhisarm,thattheysaidyoudidn'tneedtowearawatchifyoulivedinComptonStreet.

   EversinceJonathanhadsetuphouseinComptonStreet,hehadlookedafteritverycarefully.HeworkedhardinthegardeneverySundayandsetouttoimpresstheneighbourswithhisflowerbedsandlawn.Beforeheleftthehouseinthemornings,hecarefullyclosedallthedoorsdownstairs,openedsomewindowstolettheairinandlockedthefrontdoor.EverythingJonathandidwastidyandsystematic.

   OnesummereveningJonathanreturnedhomeasusualatfiveminutestosevenprecisely.Whenheopenedthefrontgateheimmediatelynoticedsomethingstrange.Therewasaheavyfootprintintheearthinoneoftheftowerbeds.Jonathanwasjustgoingtoblamethemilkmanorthepostmanwhenhenoticedthatoneofthewhitelacecurtainsinthefrontroomdownstairswasoutofplace.Jonathanneverleftanythingoutofplace.
