Weseemtobelosingthefightagainstlandmines.While,everyyear,about100,000landminesareremoved,2,000,000moreareburiedintheground.Removingthemisveryslowanddangerousworkthatmustbedonebyhand.Someonehastouseametaldetectortofindthemines.Thisisveryinaccurateasthemetaldetectorfindsallmetalobjects,notjustthemines,anditdoesnotfindnewtypesofminewhicharecoveredinplastic.Thenheorshehastodigthemineoutwithoutsettingitoff.Usingthismethoditcouldtakecenturiestoridtheworldoflandmines.
Thisiswhereroboticscomesin.Severalcountriesareworkingontechnologicalsolutionstothelandminesproblem.AspartofJapan'ssupportforfindingandremovinglandminesinAfghanistan,Japanesescientistsandengineershavebeenresearchingintorobotics.Oneofthe mostexcitingprojectsisatChibaUniversity,wherearobotthatlookssomethinglikeaninsectisbeingdeveloped.Itis4metreslong,1.8metreswide,1metrehigh,andweighs900kilograms,aboutthesizeofasmallcar.Itwalkson6legsandwhenitfindsamine,itmarksthespotwithpaintandsendsdatatoacomputerwhichcanthenmapthemines.Aswellasbeingmuchsaferthanfindingminesbyhand,theinsectrobotisalsomuchfaster.
Theuniversityisalsoexperimentingwiththerobotsothatitcanuseradartosearchforplasticmines.Thegoalisforthecomputertousethedataitreceivestodeterminenotonlywhetheranobjectisjustapieceofmetaloramine,butalsowhattypeofmineitis.TheresearchershopethatmassproductionofrobotswillstartinthenextyearorsoandtheywillbeusedinsuchcountriesasAfghanistanandCambodia.
Inthe1990sworldopinionbuiltupagainsttheuseoflandminesand,in1997,122countriessignedanagreementinOttawa,Canada,tostopthemanufactureanduseoflandmines.However,thetaskofclearingminesisstillaverydifficultone.PerhapsroboticsWillprovideasolution,butasevery20minutesgoesby,onemorepersoniskilledorbadlyinjured.
