Lindawastostudyinthenearbyall-whiteschool.Aftertheschoolrefusedher,Mr.Brownfiledalawsuitagainstthelocalboardofeducation.

Thecase,nowknownas“BrownversustheBoardofEducation”,madeitalltheWaytotheUSSupremeCourt.OnMay17,1954,thecourtdeclaredthat“Separateeducationalfacilitiesareunequal.”Thishistoricrulingendedracialsegregation(隔离)byallowingblackchildrentogotothesameschoolsaswhitechildren.

ThecourtsaidthattheUSConstitutionguaranteed“equalprotectionofthelaws”,andthismeantequaltreatmentforbacksandwhims.Thisoverturneda19thcenturyrulingthatpermitted“separatebutequal”racialsegregation.
