 Now,thefirsttimeIaddressedthisconvention,in2004,Iwasayoungerman—(laughter)—aSenatecandidatefromIllinoiswhospokeabouthope,notblindoptimism,notwishfulthinkingbuthopeinthefaceofdifficulty,hopeinthefaceofuncertainty,thatdoggedfaithinthefuturewhichhaspushedthisnationforwardevenwhentheoddsaregreat,evenwhentheroadislong.

Eightyearslaterthathopehasbeentestedbythecostofwar,byoneoftheworsteconomiccrisesinhistoryandbypoliticalgridlockthat'sleftuswonderingwhetherit'sstillevenpossibletotacklethechallengesofourtime.Iknowcampaignscanseemsmall,evensillysometimes.

Trivialthingsbecomebigdistractions.Seriousissuesbecomesoundbites.Thetruthgetsburiedunderanavalancheofmoneyandadvertising.Andifyou'resickofhearingmeapprovethismessage,believeme,soamI.(Laughter,cheers,applause.)

Butwhenallissaidanddone,whenyoupickupthatballottovote,youwillfacetheclearestchoiceofanytimeinageneration.(Cheers.)OverthenextfewyearsbigdecisionswillbemadeinWashingtononjobs,theeconomy,taxesanddeficits,energy,education,warandpeace—decisionsthatwillhaveahugeimpactonourlivesandonourchildren'slivesfordecadestocome.

Andoneveryissue,thechoiceyoufacewon'tjustbebetweentwocandidatesortwoparties.ItwillbeachoicebetweentwodifferentpathsforAmerica,achoicebetweentwofundamentallydifferentvisionsforthefuture.Oursisafighttorestorethevaluesthatbuiltthelargestmiddleclassandthestrongesteconomytheworldhaseverknown—(cheers,applause)—thevaluesmygrandfatherdefendedasasoldierinPatton'sarmy,thevaluesthatdrovemygrandmothertoworkonabomberassemblylinewhilehewasgone.Theyknewtheywerepartofsomethinglarger—anationthattriumphedoverfascismanddepression,anationwherethemostinnovativebusinessesturnouttheworld'sbestproducts,andeveryonesharedinthatprideandsuccessfromthecornerofficetothefactoryfloor.

Mygrandparentsweregiventhechancetogotocollegeandbuytheirhome—theirownhomeandfulfillthebasicbargainattheheartofAmerica'sstory,thepromisethathardworkwillpayoff,thatresponsibilitywillberewarded,thateveryonegetsafairshotandeveryonedoestheirfairshareandeveryoneplaysbythesamerules,fromMainStreettoWallStreettoWashington,D.C.(Cheers,applause.)

AndIranforpresidentbecauseIsawthatbasicbargainslippingaway.Ibeganmycareerhelpingpeopleintheshadowofashutteredsteelmillatatimewhentoomanygoodjobswerestartingtomoveoverseas.Andby2008wehadseennearlyadecadeinwhichfamiliesstruggledwithcoststhatkeptrisingbutpaychecksthatdidn't,folksrackingupmoreandmoredebtjusttomakethemortgageorpaytuition,putgasinthecarorfoodonthetable.AndwhenthehouseofcardscollapsedintheGreatRecession,millionsofinnocentAmericanslosttheirjobs,theirhomes,theirlifesavings,atragedyfromwhichwe'restillfightingtorecover.

Now,ourfriendsdowninTampaattheRepublicanconventionweremorethanhappytotalkabouteverythingtheythinkiswrongwithAmerica.Buttheydidn'thavemuchtosayabouthowthey'dmakeitright.(Cheers,applause.)Theywantyourvote,buttheydon'twantyoutoknowtheirplan.Andthat'sbecausealltheyhavetoofferisthesameprescriptionsthey'vehadforthelast30years.Haveasurplus?

Taketwotaxcuts,rollbacksomeregulations,andcallusinthemorning.(Cheers,applause.)

Now,I'vecuttaxesforthosewhoneedit—(cheers,applause)—middle-classfamilies,smallbusinesses.ButIdon'tbelievethatanotherroundoftaxbreaksformillionaireswillbringgoodjobstoourshores,orpaydownourdeficit.Idon'tbelievethatfiringteachersorkickingstudentsofffinancialaidwillgrowtheeconomy—(cheers,applause)—orhelpuscompetewiththescientistsandengineerscomingoutofChina.Afterallwe'vebeenthrough,Idon'tbelievethatrollingbackregulationsonWallStreetwillhelpthesmall-businesswomanexpand,orthelaid-offconstructionworkerkeephishome.

Wehavebeenthere,we'vetriedthat,andwe'renotgoingback.Wearemovingforward,America.(Cheers,applause.)

Now,Iwon'tpretendthepathI'mofferingisquickoreasy.Ineverhave.Youdidn'telectmetotellyouwhatyouwantedtohear.Youelectedmetotellyouthetruth.(Cheers,applause.)

Andthetruthis,itwilltakemorethanafewyearsforustosolvechallengesthathavebuiltupoverdecades.It'llrequirecommoneffort,sharedresponsibility,andthekindofbold,persistentexperimentationthatFranklinRooseveltpursuedduringtheonlycrisisworsethanthisone.(Cheers,applause.)

Andbytheway,thoseofuswhocarryonhisparty'slegacyshouldrememberthatnoteveryproblemcanberemediedwithanothergovernmentprogramordictatefromWashington.

Butknowthis,America:

Ourproblemscanbesolved.(Cheers,applause.)Ourchallengescanbemet.(Applause.)Thepathweoffermaybeharder,butitleadstoabetterplace,andI'maskingyoutochoosethatfuture.(Applause.)

I'maskingyoutorallyaroundasetofgoalsforyourcountry,goalsinmanufacturing,energy,education,nationalsecurityandthedeficit,real,achievableplansthatwillleadtonewjobs,moreopportunityandrebuildthiseconomyonastrongerfoundation.That'swhatwecandointhenextfouryears,andthatiswhyIamrunningforasecondtermaspresidentoftheUnitedStates.(Cheers,applause.)
