 Now,thefirsttimeIaddressedthisconvention,in2004,Iwasayoungerman—（laughter）—aSenatecandidatefromIllinoiswhospokeabouthope,notblindoptimism,notwishfulthinkingbuthopeinthefaceofdifficulty,hopeinthefaceofuncertainty,thatdoggedfaithinthefuturewhichhaspushedthisnationforwardevenwhentheoddsaregreat,evenwhentheroadislong.

Eightyearslaterthathopehasbeentestedbythecostofwar,byoneoftheworsteconomiccrisesinhistoryandbypoliticalgridlockthat'sleftuswonderingwhetherit'sstillevenpossibletotacklethechallengesofourtime.Iknowcampaignscanseemsmall,evensillysometimes.

Trivialthingsbecomebigdistractions.Seriousissuesbecomesoundbites.Thetruthgetsburiedunderanavalancheofmoneyandadvertising.Andifyou'resickofhearingmeapprovethismessage,believeme,soamI.（Laughter,cheers,applause.）

Butwhenallissaidanddone,whenyoupickupthatballottovote,youwillfacetheclearestchoiceofanytimeinageneration.（Cheers.）OverthenextfewyearsbigdecisionswillbemadeinWashingtononjobs,theeconomy,taxesanddeficits,energy,education,warandpeace—decisionsthatwillhaveahugeimpactonourlivesandonourchildren'slivesfordecadestocome.

Andoneveryissue,thechoiceyoufacewon'tjustbebetweentwocandidatesortwoparties.ItwillbeachoicebetweentwodifferentpathsforAmerica,achoicebetweentwofundamentallydifferentvisionsforthefuture.Oursisafighttorestorethevaluesthatbuiltthelargestmiddleclassandthestrongesteconomytheworldhaseverknown—（cheers,applause）—thevaluesmygrandfatherdefendedasasoldierinPatton'sarmy,thevaluesthatdrovemygrandmothertoworkonabomberassemblylinewhilehewasgone.Theyknewtheywerepartofsomethinglarger—anationthattriumphedoverfascismanddepression,anationwherethemostinnovativebusinessesturnouttheworld'sbestproducts,andeveryonesharedinthatprideandsuccessfromthecornerofficetothefactoryfloor.

Mygrandparentsweregiventhechancetogotocollegeandbuytheirhome—theirownhomeandfulfillthebasicbargainattheheartofAmerica'sstory,thepromisethathardworkwillpayoff,thatresponsibilitywillberewarded,thateveryonegetsafairshotandeveryonedoestheirfairshareandeveryoneplaysbythesamerules,fromMainStreettoWallStreettoWashington,D.C.（Cheers,applause.）

AndIranforpresidentbecauseIsawthatbasicbargainslippingaway.Ibeganmycareerhelpingpeopleintheshadowofashutteredsteelmillatatimewhentoomanygoodjobswerestartingtomoveoverseas.Andby2008wehadseennearlyadecadeinwhichfamiliesstruggledwithcoststhatkeptrisingbutpaychecksthatdidn't,folksrackingupmoreandmoredebtjusttomakethemortgageorpaytuition,putgasinthecarorfoodonthetable.AndwhenthehouseofcardscollapsedintheGreatRecession,millionsofinnocentAmericanslosttheirjobs,theirhomes,theirlifesavings,atragedyfromwhichwe'restillfightingtorecover.

Now,ourfriendsdowninTampaattheRepublicanconventionweremorethanhappytotalkabouteverythingtheythinkiswrongwithAmerica.Buttheydidn'thavemuchtosayabouthowthey'dmakeitright.（Cheers,applause.）Theywantyourvote,buttheydon'twantyoutoknowtheirplan.Andthat'sbecausealltheyhavetoofferisthesameprescriptionsthey'vehadforthelast30years.Haveasurplus?

Andbytheway,thoseofuswhocarryonhisparty'slegacyshouldrememberthatnoteveryproblemcanberemediedwithanothergovernmentprogramordictatefromWashington.
