Inabout1440,aGermangoldsmithnamedJohannGutenbergdevelopedtheideaofmovabletype.Heinventedseparatelettersmadeofmetalforprinting.Theletterscouldbejoinedtogethertomakewordsandsentences.Inkwasappliedtotheletterstoprintmanycopiesofthesamematerial.Becausetheyweremadeofmetal,theletterscouldbeusedoverandover.Thiswonderfulinventionmadeitpossibletohavemoreprintedmaterialatalowercost.

Gutenberghadotherideasthatwereimportanttoprinting.Hedevelopedaspecialtypeofinkthatwouldsticktothenewmetalletters.Gutenberg’sideasweresosuccessfulthattheprocessofprinting______formorethan300years.

Therearefourkindsofwoodwindinstrumentsinmodernbands.Theyareflutes（笛子）,oboes,clarinetsandbassoons（大管）.Theyarecalled“woodwind”instrumentsfortwosensiblereasons.Inthebeginning,theywereallmadeofwood.Also,themusician’sbreath,or“wind,”wasrequiredtoplaythem.

Althoughtheyareallwoodwinds,theseinstrumentslookdifferentandareplayeddifferently.Toplayanoboe,themusicianblowsthroughamouthpieceonthefrontoftheinstrument.Themouthpiece,calledareed（簧舌）,ismadeoftwoflatpiecesofakindofwoodcalledcane.Clarinetplayersalsoblowintoareedmouthpiece.Theclarinethasonlyonereedinitsmouthpiece.

Toplaytheflute,themusicianblowsacrossaholenearoneendoftheinstrument.Thewaythebreathisaimedhelpstomaketheflute’sdifferentsounds.Thebassoonisthelargestwoodwindinstrument.Bassoonplayersblowthroughamouthpiecethatgoesthroughashortmetalpipebeforeitgoesintothebodyofthebassoon.Itmakesaverydifferentsoundfromtheclarinetortheoboe.
