Inabout1440,aGermangoldsmithnamedJohannGutenbergdevelopedtheideaofmovabletype.Heinventedseparatelettersmadeofmetalforprinting.Theletterscouldbejoinedtogethertomakewordsandsentences.Inkwasappliedtotheletterstoprintmanycopiesofthesamematerial.Becausetheyweremadeofmetal,theletterscouldbeusedoverandover.Thiswonderfulinventionmadeitpossibletohavemoreprintedmaterialatalowercost.

Gutenberghadotherideasthatwereimportanttoprinting.Hedevelopedaspecialtypeofinkthatwouldsticktothenewmetalletters.Gutenberg’sideasweresosuccessfulthattheprocessofprinting______formorethan300years.

Therearefourkindsofwoodwindinstrumentsinmodernbands.Theyareflutes(笛子),oboes,clarinetsandbassoons(大管).Theyarecalled“woodwind”instrumentsfortwosensiblereasons.Inthebeginning,theywereallmadeofwood.Also,themusician’sbreath,or“wind,”wasrequiredtoplaythem.

Althoughtheyareallwoodwinds,theseinstrumentslookdifferentandareplayeddifferently.Toplayanoboe,themusicianblowsthroughamouthpieceonthefrontoftheinstrument.Themouthpiece,calledareed(簧舌),ismadeoftwoflatpiecesofakindofwoodcalledcane.Clarinetplayersalsoblowintoareedmouthpiece.Theclarinethasonlyonereedinitsmouthpiece.

Toplaytheflute,themusicianblowsacrossaholenearoneendoftheinstrument.Thewaythebreathisaimedhelpstomaketheflute’sdifferentsounds.Thebassoonisthelargestwoodwindinstrument.Bassoonplayersblowthroughamouthpiecethatgoesthroughashortmetalpipebeforeitgoesintothebodyofthebassoon.Itmakesaverydifferentsoundfromtheclarinetortheoboe.

Woodwindinstrumentsalsohavekeys—butnotthekindofkeysthatopenlocks.Thesekeysaremorelikelevers(杠杆)thatthemusicianpushesupanddown.Theleverscoverholes.Whenthemusicianpushesdownonalever,itclosesthathole.Whenhe/sheliftshis/herfinger,itopensthehole.Differentsoundsareproducedbycontrollingtheamountofbreath,or“wind,”thatgoesthroughtheholes.
