Theevolutionbiologist,RichardDawkins,coinedtheterm“meme”inhisbookTheSelfishGene.AccordingtoDawkins,whilegenesarethepiecesofbiologicalinformationfromourparentswhichdeterminesourappearanceandhowwegrow,memesareunitsofculturalinformation—ideasandbeliefs—that“passfrombraintobrain”.Likegenes,memesmustcompeteforsurvival—ifamemecannotgainourattention,itdisappears.

Basically,anysharedidearelatedtocultureisameme.Myths,forexample,arememes.Everysocietyhasitsownstoriesthathavesurvived,withsomevariations,forhundredsorthousandsofyears.ThemythologicaldragoninChinesecultureisanideathathasbeensuccessfullypassedbetweenpeopleforgeneration,andisthereforealsoameme.
