WhyILoveThanksgiving

AOvertheyears,IhavehadtheopportunitytovisitnearlyeverystateintheUnion,andIneverceasetobeamazedbyourcountry'svarietyofpeopleandplaces.IcanstepoutofasubwayintoNewYorkCity,goaroundaMichiganblueberryfarm,ordigforclamsalongadesertedbeachinMaine.TheseplacesareverydifferentbuttheyrepresentthelandIlove.

BOneofthestrongestsimilaritiesIhavefoundinallofusAmericansisthewaywetreatholidays.Weallloveholidays.Theygiveusareasontoforgetroutine,tocelebrate,andtomakememories.WhatholidaygivesusabetterchancetodoallofthesethingsthanThanksgiving?

Thanksgivingweekendisformostofusthelongest,leastinterruptedweekendoftheyear.Itistheidealtimeforfamilyandfriendstocometogetheragain.ItisalsothemostpurelyAmericanofallholidays,becauseitcelebratesthesettlingofourcountrybythePilgrimsover350yearsago.

CForme,ThanksgivingrecallsallthethingsinlifethatIrespondtomoststronglyandforwhichIamtrulythankful.Thereisthesimplebeautyoftheearthandtheharvesttime.Thereisthesatisfactionthatcomesfromtheworkingofthecrops.Andthereisthetraditionofthedayitself:

thereturntomyfamilyhomesinthegreenhillsofMarylandandVirginia,thedeliciousfood,andthesharingofholidayrituals.

FIliketobelievethatIcanrememberclearlyeverytaste,everysmell,everyslightlyoff-keynoteofourhappysinging—everythingexceptwherealltheThanksgivingswent.AsIgrowolder,thecelebrationsseemtomergeintoonesetofthebestmemories.I’llalwaysrememberThanksgivingsasthetimesweategoodfood,sangold-fashionedsongs,andsharedalotoflovewithfamilyandfriends.Mayyouallhavethesamekindofjoy.
